Text and/or other creative content from History of American football was copied or moved into Early history of American football with this edit on October 2015. Contested deletion
[edit]This article should not be speedy deleted as being recently created, having no relevant page history and duplicating an existing English Wikipedia topic, because... (Consensus was made to split History of American football due to excessive size) --ParkH.Davis (talk) 21:04, 16 October 2015 (UTC)
- I just saw that so I removed the speedy deletion template on both pages. Don't forget to attribute with {{copied}} or a similar template. clpo13(talk) 21:09, 16 October 2015 (UTC)
Orphaned references in Early history of American football
[edit]I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Early history of American football's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

32 or 33?
[edit]Granted Davis's book says 1933, but doesn't this article end with 32 and the modern one pick up at '33? Cake (talk) 21:51, 16 October 2015 (UTC)
- Fixed, it does make more sense for the first to end in 1932 and the second begin 1933. ParkH.Davis (talk) 22:32, 16 October 2015 (UTC)
Notability of entrants into the "Innovators and Motivators" section
[edit]While I am most certainly in favor of adding as much as information as is both reasonable and necessary to do, I think that coaches discussed in the "Innovators and Motivators" section should have made some sort of notable contribution to the game itself, and not have had just success on the field. They should have made a lasting or otherwise important innovation, such as inventing an offense tactic or some sort of equipment which is now in wide use, etc. The information being added is great, I just think we need to form a consensus about which info should be included about these coaches and what about these coaches makes them worthy of inclusion. ParkH.Davis (talk) 02:21, 19 October 2015 (UTC)
- I concur. Some of the edits are with the hope some of you other guys know what it is which made them famous. E. g. I know with conviction Jones and Smith were the two biggest coaches on the Pacific Coast at the time, but I couldn't tell you what schemes they ran, etc. If really nothing else is known by anyone else, then one probably won't find an advocate in me if you carve it up. I tend not to know what to cut. To further the discussion, Percy Haughton is one whose success and early accolades probably deserve mention, if for only being Harvard's greatest coach. However I know nothing more about him and so did not add him. Charley Moran is an arguable case for inclusion, for it is shocking he is not in the hall of fame. We can start with Edwin Pope's Football's Greatest Coaches perhaps. I would also like to note it is difficult for a reader not to be confused by the disparate history of the huddle with Stagg, Zuppke, and Gallaudet. Cake (talk) 13:52, 19 October 2015 (UTC)
- @ParkH.Davis: Would you know any more about Davis's claim to first having jersey numbers? I can also find Stagg and Warner having this title, and next to Stagg I find the date of 1913 which empirically holds up. I can respect if it was a committee of sorts like with the forward pass or the division into quarters. The latter was like that with Davis and Heisman, for example; but none of the sources I find mention that. Cake (talk) 05:55, 23 October 2015 (UTC)

- By "that" I meant a committee for jersey numbers. Laundry lists for Warner and Stagg's innovations also mention jersey numbers. See here or here; and the former includes the year of 1913. I notice we have numbers for Bob McWhorter and the Vols. Cake (talk) 14:42, 23 October 2015 (UTC)

2 Old timers worthy of mention
[edit]Unsure where to stick them, but Pa Corbin and Alex Moffat both deserve mention somewhere. They might be the oldest fellows in the Hall. Cake (talk) 14:14, 19 October 2015 (UTC)
Ball and Formations
[edit]We may want to add some on the history of the ball and of formations (cf. Quarterback). Cake (talk) 02:13, 5 December 2015 (UTC)
Pop Warner
[edit]We previously had a discussion on there being a need to expand articles on allot of the major figures. I can't find it. What I want to say is that I just started working on the Pop Warner article. Rybkovich (talk) 06:42, 23 December 2015 (UTC)
- Hope you can find something to clear up whether he or Stagg invented reverse (I believe Warner invented the reverse, and Stagg the end-around), and whether Davis, Stagg, or Warner started numbering jerseys. Cake (talk) 01:20, 24 December 2015 (UTC)

I'll review this one. I hope to have my first comments ready soon. Phlsph7 (talk) 07:22, 25 November 2022 (UTC)
Unfortunately, this is a quick fail: there are just too many unreferenced paragraphs, see WP:QF. I've recently added various "citation needed" tags to the article to highlight this problem. They should all be addressed before a renomination.
Some additional points that caught my eye:
- The article is very long: by my count, about 105 kB of pure text. That's a strong indication that the article contains too many details, see WP:TOOBIG and WP:SUMMARY. It might be a good idea to summarize more and move the details to more specific articles.
- The article contains various duplicate links ( e.g. Native Americans, Parke H. Davis, The Football Association, Columbia University, Rugby Football Union) that should be removed, see MOS:DUPLINK
- WP:EARWIG shows one potential copyright violation (https://www.vintag.es/2018/03/american-football-players.html), though it's probably them who copied from us.
