You can't do this to me! I'm nothing without my shapes! You can't leave me as a useless RainWing! Where am I supposed to go?
~ Darkness of Dragons, page 231

Chameleon is a major antagonist of the Wings of Fire series, serving as the secondary antagonist of The Jade Mountain Prophecy arc.

He is the father of Peril and Sky, the former mate of Kestrel (under the form of Soar), Queen Scarlet's right-hand dragon, and a brief associate of Vulture.

He is a RainWing born physically disfigured, causing him to be unable to sleep for a healthy amount of time. RainWing's powers come from the energy they get from sleeping, so he was unable to change colours or camouflage, but despite this, he was ostracized and exiled from the RainWing kingdom.

He later found Darkstalker's scroll talisman, which allowed him to use animus magic infinitely as long as he didn't lose the scroll. He then used the talisman to be able to transform into different dragon tribes, with his known forms being Soar (SkyWing), Cirrus (IceWing), Bog (MudWing), Shapeshifter (NightWing).

Appearance[]

Chameleon[]

Chameleon has scales that are the colors of limes and jungle parakeets, and were described to be a yellowish-green. He is skinny, with narrow shoulders, dull teeth, a deformed snout, and several rings around his claws. He is much scrawnier and less intimidating in comparison to his other shapes.

Bog[]

Bog has mud-brown scales and is almost completely covered in different kinds of jewelry: gold chains around his neck that dangle from an elaborate ruby-encrusted headpiece clashing with the rows of silver, emerald, and topaz earrings in each ear; silver chain mail studded with sapphires on his chest; golden silk veils wreathing his wings; giant bejeweled rings on his talons; and a gold tail band shaped to look like dragon claws clutching every inch of his tail, each claw tipped with a sapphire. He also wears a pouch tied firmly under one of his wings where he kept his pieces of Darkstalker's scroll.

Cirrus[]

Cirrus is severe-looking, with silvery-white scales and wings and pale purple underscales. His eyes are glittering, cold, and snakelike, and he has a voice like icicles dripping. He is larger than Winter and fiercely thin, with claws that look even sharper than normal IceWing claws.

Shapeshifter[]

Shapeshifter has black scales, narrow black eyes, and was described to be angry-looking, ominous, eerie, and still. He is quite large, described as hulking and enormous, with sharp talons like wicked fishhooks. He wears a mess of dark jewelry and compact iron boxes on chains, including a case that held Darkstalker's talisman around his chest, as well as three bracelets, a ring, and a couple of necklaces. He has extra strength, extraordinarily hot fire, and invulnerable scales.

Soar[]

Soar has warm golden-orange scales, large orange wings, and hooded amber eyes. He has no visible scars, long horns with faint golden markings on them, and a deeper, stronger voice than that of Chameleon. He also looks wealthier than the average SkyWing: he wears gold rings on three of his claws, a black leather necklace with gold spikes circling his throat, and an armband weaving like a snake all the way up one of his forelegs, with tiny rubies glittering like eyes at one end. He has a black metal sheath fitted tightly across his chest with a padlock on the outside, containing a small pouch full of coins or jewelry, and formerly a piece of Darkstalker's scroll wrapped in black leather binding. He is large and strong-looking.

Biography[]

Background[]

At some unspecified time in the past, Chameleon lived in the Rainforest Kingdom. However, one day, he was banished from there by the queen of that time. The reason for his exile is the fact that he had a deformity in the part of his nose in which he could not sleep for an hour, and as a consequence, his scales could never camouflage themselves like the rest of his tribe. This defect led to him being seen by the other dragons as an abomination.

Some time later, he would find the legendary Darkstalker´s scroll and learn to read and write in order to know about it. Thanks to the great power of the manuscript, Chameleon would create different versions of himself, each one belonging to a different tribe.

On one occasion, he would live in the Sky Kingdom where he would meet Queen Scarlet, and would turn to spy on the Talons of Peace (transforming into an Icewing named Cirrus). Likewise (transformed into a Skywing called Soar), he would fall in love with a dragon called Kestrel, with whom he would have 2 children: Peril and Sky.

The Lost Heir[]

After the SkyWings kidnapped the dragonets of destiny, Chameleon, who was posing as Cirrus, was a member of Nautilus' team that located Webs. When he insisted that Webs tell them how the SkyWings discovered them, Webs described the dragonets' escape strategy and how it came to pass. Webs merely said that they followed Tsunami and Clay back to the cave's entrance when Cirrus questioned why they were connected to the SkyWings. Cirrus was furious because he knew they couldn't make it through the arena of former Queen Scarlet. Cirrus alluded to the fact that there were innumerable SkyWings and only roughly forty members of the Talons of Peace when Webs proposed that the Talons assault the SkyWings. Cirrus pinned him down when Nautilus announced his backup plan and warned that Webs would be an issue, claiming that Webs had let them down. Because the SeaWing was unaware of the Talons of Peace's contingency plan and had let the dragonets escape, he was told to murder Webs. Additionally, he declared that he would feed the fish Webs' heart, perhaps taking sick delight in the thought of murdering the bewildered SeaWing. But when Crocodile tackled him and Nautilus, they were both stopped and rendered unconscious, allowing Webs to avoid being put to death.

Moon Rising[]

In the epilogue, while holding and tapping Darkstalker's scroll, Chameleon, a NightWing known as Shapeshifter, conversed with Ex-Queen Scarlet.

Winter Turning[]

When Winter was visiting Glory, Bullfrog, a RainWing healer, subtly referred to Chameleon as a lime green RainWing who was unable to sleep due to a malformation in their nose or change the color of their scales. It was also reported that he had seen other RainWings while they slept. This was how Chameleon was described. Later, when Scarlet visited Icicle, Winter, Qibli, Kinkajou, and Moonwatcher traveled to the Talons of Peace to obtain a SkyWing that would assist them discover the peak that Moon had seen in her dream. They discovered a dragon named Pyrite when they arrived, and Chameleon, who was posing as Cirrus, objected to them taking her. Winter speculated that Pyrite might be an animus and that Cirrus intended to restore the magic to the IceWing lineage, but he dismissed the notion after observing that he showed no signs of going back to the Ice Kingdom. Winter said that since he was royalty, he and Cirrus ought to have known each other. Cirrus responded that he might know Winter's parents, Narwhal and Tundra. Queen Glacier told Winter later that they haven´t had a Cirrus in many time on the way to Winter and Hailstorm's Diamond Trial. She stated she would investigate, speculating that he might have been outside the kingdom and thus lacked a rank on the IceWing wall. Moonwatcher, Winter, and Qibli overheard Chameleon speaking to Scarlet while wearing his NightWing mask Shapeshifter. Later, he attacked Kinkajou, slamming her into a tree and putting her in a coma when he went to the dragonets' camp to get Pyrite. He did this because he harbored resentment for the RainWings, according to Escaping Peril. Even though his wounds healed when he changed shape, he went with his eyes burned by the Moon and frozen by the Winter after failing to acquire Pyrite.

Escaping Peril[]

As Cirrus, Chameleon halted Turtle and Peril's Talons of Peace journey. Cirrus inquired about Kestrel and discovered that Peril was Kestrel's daughter after Avalanche brought up Kestrel in a speech she gave about her desire to murder Peril when she was a dragonet. Later, behind him and Peril, Turtle noticed a dragon—likely a Chameleon—dive into the jungle. The following morning, Turtle discovered talonprints close to their sleeping area that were not his or Peril's. Chameleon probably owned them. Peril saw Chameleon in his NightWing form staring at her as he and Turtle took off. A huge SkyWing flew towards Peril as she sat atop the sandstone formation outside of Possibility, but Winter and Foeslayer's approach diverted its attention. Peril fled the scene of the altercation with Winter, and the SkyWing began flying with her. After introducing himself as Soar, he told her that he was her father. They were joined by former Queen Scarlet, and Soar revealed to Peril that he was a RainWing by the name of Chameleon. In order to counteract the effects of her firescales, he offered her a bizarre necklace as a gift. Unbeknownst to Peril, the present was also tampered with to make Scarlet forget Clay by enchanting her loyalty. A guard ran forward and claimed that a NightWing had entered the throne room as Ruby/Tourmaline retook the throne. This was the NightWing form of Chameleon. When Peril and the Jade Winglet faced Chameleon, they discovered he was too strong for them. Turtle stole his scroll with his powers and smashed it into Chameleon's face, seriously wounding him. Peril screamed for the dragonets to stop since he thought Chameleon deserved his punishment regardless of his actions. Chameleon was left with his forms after the dragonets fled.

Darkness of Dragons[]

In Vulture's lair, Chameleon pretended to be a MudWing named Bog and made an appearance as a fictitious hostage. Qibli could tell he was lying when he told Winter and Qibli that the MudWings were planning to start a war and were responsible for the explosions in the Kingdom of Sand. Later, as Winter was trying to release Vulture's scavenging inmates, Qibli, Winter, Cobra, and Ostrich ran into Bog while attempting to flee Vulture's complex. He knew them from his days as a Shapeshifter and questioned what they were doing. He threatened to kill the scavenger if Qibli and Winter would not release him, despite their best efforts to oppose him. After that, Winter stopped fighting. After that, Qibli and Winter were able to return to Cobra and Ostrich. Later, Kinkajou, who was exploring the area, began to "stealthily" follow Bog when he appeared in the Night Kingdom. Bog entered a room, shut the door, and emerged as Shapeshifter, Chameleon's superpowered NightWing form. After Kinkajou informed Qibli of this, the latter promptly recognized the two dragons as Chameleon and most likely brought Vulture with them. In order to obtain Chameleon's fragments of Darkstalker's Talisman, Qibli and Kinkajou came up with a scheme. As Kinkajou seized Chameleon's earring, which contained the fragments of talisman, Qibli approached and served as a distraction. After swiftly reprimanding Chameleon, Kinkajou struck him unconscious.

Quotes[]

Wait. No, no, no. Not SORE. SOAR, S-O-A-R, like flying high over the kingdom. Oh, good grief. Have other dragons been thinking my name is Sore all these years?
~ Chameleon (as Soar) meeting Peril, his daughter
I know what you mean. You can do and say everything exactly the same as everyone else, but if there's one thing different about you, that's all that they care about.
~ Chameleon (as Soar) to Peril
My daughter is powerful and amazing and terrifying. Who wouldn't be proud of that?
~ Chameleon to Queen Scarlet about Peril
It's not just a necklace. Peril, don't you understand what I can do? I can turn you into anyone you want. I could make you a SeaWing or an IceWing or even a scavenger, if you particularly wanted to get eaten for some reason. I could make you a MudWing. I could take away your firescales. Don't you see? You could be normal. You could be a dragon who can touch other dragons. You don't have to be this monster everyone is afraid of. I can change you.
~ Chameleon to Peril
This is a special case. [...] I'd do anything to help my dragonet.
~ Chameleon to Queen Scarlet
Ha. As long as you aren't too different, sure. But I had one problem the tribe couldn't understand: I can't change my scales. You saw my RainWing color. When I'm a RainWing, I'm stuck that way. That same green all the time — no camouflage, no flamboyant emotional outbursts, no self-absorbed displays of clever special effects. I could never play their little RainWing games. The healers guessed that it was because of my sleep problem — as myself, I can never sleep for longer than a few minutes at a time, an hour at most. They thought it affected my scale-shifting abilities. But knowing that didn't help. Everyone still teased me ... and then whispered about me ... and then avoided me. Finally the queen banished me, saying I was making everyone uncomfortable, and perhaps there was a better tribe for me outside the rainforest somewhere.
~ Chameleon describing the reason for its inability to camouflage himself
It's the strongest magic in the world. I've never read the whole thing ... But then, I only had to read the beginning to realize what it could do. [...] If Scarlet knew I had unlimited power, she'd make me do much more terrible things than anything I've done so far. I'm not an evil dragon, Peril ... I'm not going to give anyone all this power, especially not Queen Scarlet.
~ Chameleon to Peril about Darkstalker´s scroll
I have a very nice life, though. And so can you, once this kingdom is all sorted out. We'll be her right-claw dragons, and we'll be together. Maybe you can help me come up with clever uses for the scroll. It'll be nice to have family at last.
~ Chameleon to Peril
But it's mine. I found it, I get to keep it. Why should you have it? What makes you all any better than me?
~ Chameleon refusing to hand over Darkstalker's scroll to Moonwatcher, Qibli, Winter and Peril
You can't do this to me! I'm nothing without my shapes! You can't leave me as a useless RainWing! Where am I supposed to go?
~ Chameleon to Kinkajou and Qibli; his last words

Trivia[]

  • Chameleon serves as a dark counterpart to his daughter Peril, as both were outcasts from their respective tribes. Had Peril not met Clay, she most likely would've gone down the same path as her father and ended up like him.
