Redd Kross documentary screenings set for Pittsburgh
From grunge to hair metal to punk and beyond, Redd Kross’ influence has permeated the music scene throughout its 45-plus years.
Featuring brothers Jeff and Steven McDonald, the critically acclaimed band keeps rolling, including a self-titled double album in April, a national tour (including a July stop at Spirit Hall in Pittsburgh), a memoir and a documentary.
Officially released earlier this year, the documentary “Born Innocent: The Redd Kross Story” will screen Jan. 4, 5 and 8 at the Harris Theater in Pittsburgh. Helmed by former “Friends” executive producer Andrew Reich, the film earned the Jury Award for best documentary at the 2023 Sound Unseen Film Festival.
At previous screenings, Steven McDonald described seeing his life on screen as an interesting and surreal experience.
“I kind of leave my body to do that, but it’s been pleasantly a relief that (Reich) did such a good job with it, he told our story,” Steven McDonald said in an interview with TribLive earlier this year. “That was also one of the (stipulations) working with Andrew is that he got final cut. We didn’t get to step in in the editing bay and shape how we’re presented, as much as that would be a temptation.
“It was challenging to let that go, but also, at some point, I realized, well, I like this guy and his motives seem to be good. And it’s probably good that I’m not in the editing bay because I’m gonna end up with something like Gene Simmons’ reality TV show or something that just feels very staged.”
