A Ranker (랭커, Raengkeo) is an individual who has reached the top of the Zahard Empire (currently the 134th Floor) and has been assigned a Rank. This Rank should not be confused with the continuous Ranking and Grading that both Rankers and Regulars receive.

About[]

Ranker are those who have reached the 134th Floor and been assigned a rank. This Rank is issued by the Ranking Administration Office and is calculated based on various factors, including power, recognition and influence. Some Rankers hold high rankings due to their influence and attributes (e.g. Baek Ryun), while others may have weaker combat strength but hold high rankings for other reasons (e.g. Evan Edrok)".

According to SIU, the Ranker position in the Tower is a prestigious status (one can assume they have no financial worries). However, becoming a Ranker doesn't end rivalries. On the contrary, Rankers often enter even more intense rivalries as they seek higher positions and better opportunities.^[2]

Because of this, Rankers sometimes serve as Test Directors or Test Administrators of Floors. They are viewed as gods and hold a much higher status than Regulars or normal residents of the Tower. Rankers are permitted to use the Middle Area's staircases to skip certain Floors or travel between the Inner and Outer Towers. Despite these privileges, they are usually restricted from entering the Regulars' Districts or associating with Regulars.^[3]

Rankers at Karaka's level possess eyes that rival Observers, a result of years of intense physical and mental training.^[4]

Advanced Ranker[]

If a Ranker's ranking is in the top 10% of all Rankers, they are considered an Advanced Ranker (상위 랭커, sang-wi laengkeo). There are approximately 10,000 Advanced Rankers (including the top 1%).^[5]

High Ranker[]

If a Ranker's ranking is in the top 1% of all Rankers, they are considered a High Ranker (하이 랭커, hai raengkeo). There are about 1,000 High Rankers in total. High Rankers are often described as "gods among gods." Only those of a High Ranker's level can become a Ruler.^[6]

The appearance of a single High Ranker is considered a calamity for any Regular. It's customary for those managing or ruling a floor to warn all Regulars if a High Ranker appears. If a High Ranker causes a disturbance, the Rankers in charge of that floor typically challenge the intruder. This scenario is often compared to a nuclear bomb threat—only other nukes can counter nukes.^[7]

High Rankers can earn the right to ascend to the 135th Floor, but the Guardian of this Floor is hostile,^[8] and no High Ranker has ever ascended.^[8] The key to the 135th Floor is divided and hidden by Zahard in the 13 month series and the rings of the Prince of the Red-Light District.

High Rankers rarely fight for their lives. A fight like the one between Yuri and Karaka at the end of the 'Name Hunt' Station arc is a rare event.^[4]

According to Evankhell, except for certain special positions, if a High Ranker in the top 300 cannot defeat another High Ranker from the same group, they will never rise in the rankings. This is because to reach the top 300, a Ranker must distinguish themselves from others below them.^[9]

Blue Hole[]

There is a term called Blue Hole (블루홀, beulluhol) for High Rankers who have been inactive for so long that no one knows whether they are dead or alive. It is also used for Rankers whose true influence or power is difficult to measure.^[10]

Sobriquet[]

Sobriquet (이명, 異名, I-myeong; "nickname" or "pseudonym") is a title given to High Rankers by the Ranking Administration Office. It typically refers to the Ranker's battle Position or other aspects. Only High Rankers are can receive a sobriquet.^[11]

Fishermen are given names of Shinheuh^[6] (e.g. Ha Yuri Zahard: Black Snakehead).
Guides are given names of Boats (e.g. Evan Edrok: Fast Boat).
Wave Controllers are given names of Winds and Waves (e.g. Po Bidau Gustang: Lone Wave).

Some Sobriquets are based on other traits. For example:

Enryu's sobriquet is "Red Tower" because his presence causes the environment around him to turn red for unknown reasons.
Zahard, the first King in the History of the Tower, holds the sobriquet "King of the Tower".

A sobriquet can be "turned down", as Baek Ryun and Khun Eduan have done. Additionally, some individuals may receive multiple Sobriquets, like Khun Eduan.

Notes and Trivia[]

Rankers and High Rankers are generally forbidden from associating with Regulars. However, "FUG is a random bunch so they don't care about the rules."^[12]
Active Rankers may be a few hundred to a few thousand years old. Despite this, family memories and bonds remain strong, and these relationships continue to affect them when they meet again.^[13]
"There is a big difference between the number of weapons carried by a Ranker and by a High Ranker. If a Ranker carries 10, a High Ranker would carry 100."^[14]
