This article focuses on the interactions between Carrie and Devin.
Overview[]
Carrie and Devin have been friends since childhood, meeting each other during their pre-school years. As they grow older, Carrie starts to develop romantic feelings for her longtime companion, wishing for their relationship to evolve beyond friendship. The pair join the Ridonculous Race and are dubbed "The Best Friends." Devin is completely unaware of his friend's feelings for him during the Race, despite how apparent they may be. Furthermore, Devin discloses that he is currently in a relationship with a girl named Shelley, who was initially supposed to be his partner for the Race but was unavailable, causing jealousy in Carrie.
Devin eventually finds out, through a phone conversation, that Shelley has dumped him for her tennis instructor. This unexpected revelation sends Devin into a phase of emotional ups and downs, which Spud refers to as "The Seven Stages of Heartbreak" for multiple episodes. Carrie helps Devin to go through these stages in the hopes that he will eventually move on from Shelley. However, Carrie grows impatient with him as he continues to be oblivious and chooses to concentrate on the Race instead. In a twist of irony, Devin finally recognizes his feelings for Carrie during this period, resulting in a reversal of their roles. The unrequited love drama lasted until near the finale, where they finally confess their feelings to each other. Unfortunately, fortune does not favor them entirely, as Devin sustains an injury in the same episode and is rendered unable to continue competing. Consequently, they are compelled to withdraw from the competition.

None Down, Eighteen to Go—Part 1[]
When the Best Friends are introduced, Carrie is seen staring lovingly at Devin. In their first interview, Carrie explains how she met Devin, and is confident they could win. The pair choose the Scares challenge over the Stairs, which requires them to sky-walk around the top of the CN Tower. Devin initially succumbs to his fear of heights, until Carrie manages to motivate him. In another interview, Devin talks about how much trust he puts in Carrie, while listing her good qualities, which flatters her. However, he quickly kills the mood when he mentions his girlfriend, Shelley, much to Carrie's surprise.
None Down, Eighteen to Go—Part 2[]
In an interview, the two talk about how Devin probably would've missed the cinnamon. He responds believing there’s no way he'd miss it, since Carrie often spills her cinnamon lattes on him, and she decides not to doubt his ability to detect cinnamon. She dreamily looks at Devin as he swallows the stew, before looking at the camera and blushing as she admits she loves Devin, and has loved him since they were four. She doesn't know how to tell him after all this time, and worries he won't feel the same way, especially since he already has a girlfriend. The Best Friends quickly take first place. After Carrie trips, Devin picks her up and holds her in his arms as they run to the Chill Zone, where they're congratulated by Don for coming in first. Devin talks about how he knew they'd be a great team, but he wasn’t expecting to make it in first place.
French is an Eiffel Language[]
The two celebrate after reading their travel tip, which says they're going to Paris. They are the first team to depart, and as they ride their moped, Carrie holds onto Devin's chest while blushing. Carrie and Devin agree that Paris is the most romantic place on earth, and Devin talks about how he wants to go back to Paris with Shelley after the race, which causes Carrie to feel disappointed due to her slight discontent towards her relationship with Devin. On flight number one, Carrie and Devin share a bag of chips. When Carrie draws Devin, she draws him based on her daydreams of him. When her caricature is rejected, Devin defends her since she got an A in art, but comes to the conclusion that it may be too realistic. When Devin picks up Carrie, she blushes and puts her hands on his shoulders. As the Best Friends watch the daters argue, Devin jokingly says that they're some fireworks. Carrie starts telling Devin that she's glad they’re here together, and he agrees. He says that he's glad he chose to do the race with her instead of Shelley since they'd probably argue just like Ryan and Stephanie. He decides it’s perfect that they’re best friends since they’ll stay the same forever; just friends. He then walks away to go to sleep, leaving Carrie disappointed.
Hello and Dubai[]
As Carrie gets ready to do the challenge, Devin gives her a quick pep talk, saying no matter what happens, he believes in her. He then switches to a story about how Shelley often hangs with her tennis instructor, and says tennis is a mental game, which causes Carrie to lose focus. Devin tries to motivate Carrie again, telling her to think “what would Shelley do”, before she loses her patience with him, saying she's not Shelley and never will be, and runs away. Carrie feels bad since their team might lose on account of her poor tennis skills. Devin tries cheering her up, saying they'll be friends with or without the race, and he'll try getting Shelley's tennis instructor to give her advice.
New Beijinging[]
On the flight, Carrie watches Devin sleep, believing it's awesome and that sometimes he mumbles the sweetest things in his sleep. Rock walks over, asking Carrie if she's going to “make a move on that”, causing her to say that they're just friends. He reminds her that the opportunity isn't going to last forever, and she remembers that the whole reason she entered the race was to show him they had a connection. Carrie cries after realizing she may be alone forever since she didn't tell Devin about her feelings in Hawaii. She decides she'd rather let Devin have a life with Shelley than not have him in her life at all.
Devin wakes up from a dream about him and Carrie living together, and she appears to be excited by this, as she blushes after he goes back to sleep. Devin discusses how he's not good with heights - or falling from them, but that he's lucky to have Carrie with him, since Shelley would've bailed. Carrie quickly diverts his attention from her so she can celebrate being better than Shelley in one way. Devin accidentally makes Carrie barf after mentioning worms, due to her sister having dared her to eat a worm when they were kids, which caused her to barf for six days straight. As they see a snake coil in the shape of a heart, Carrie tells Devin it must be a sign, right before the snake bites his face. Devin tells Carrie to have faith, and imagine the food is chicken.

Carrie realizes she needs to tell Devin soon, as if he did call Shelley, it would disrupt everything that's happened between them. Devin is quick to try to get out of the cell, but Carrie tried convincing him to take a break so she could tell him something. As Devin works on cutting the bars, Carrie confesses her love for Devin, unaware of the fact that he didn't hear. The Best Friends come in first and win the phone call. Devin chooses to call Shelley, and ignores Carrie's attempts at telling him something before he called her. As Devin cries about being dumped, Carrie ponders over whether she should tell him, or wait until he's done sobbing.
Down and Outback[]
As Devin is depressed from the events of the previous episode, Carrie has to push him over to the Don Box. Carrie finds Devin and Shelley's breakup to be both horrible and amazing, saying he may not think it’s amazing, but he will. Carrie tries reminding Devin that he's got many more people who care about him, but accidentally triggers his denial, as he believes Shelley was only pranking him. Carrie tries telling Devin that Shelley probably won't care about him for the second time, but he believes it was just a misunderstanding and covers his ears, refusing to hear her. Spud explains to Carrie that Devin’s going through the seven stages of heartbreak. Carrie then plans to make Devin get over Shelley faster by helping him get mad at her. Carrie starts with her plan, asking Devin if he's angry. As Devin is now more determined to win, Carrie decides that it’s better, since at least he’s not crying anymore. When Devin is disappointed about coming in third, Carrie reminds him maybe they’ll get first next time. Devin thanks her, and says he couldn’t have asked for a better partner.
Lord of the Ring Toss[]
Carrie asks Devin if they should ally with the Goths, leading to him saying alliances are just invitations to get stabbed in the back. Carrie believes Devin's reached rock bottom now, as he collapses into the snow. Carrie tries asking Devin to help her out more with the next challenge, and he responds saying helplessness is a sign of depression. Carrie comes to the conclusion that Devin’s rock bottom must be in a box, in a hole, at the base of the Grand Canyon. Carrie is shocked when Stephanie boomerangs Ryan, wondering why someone would boomerang their own team, to which Devin believes they did because they realized it’s all meaninglessness because death is inevitable.
Got Venom[]
When Crimson and Ennui tell Devin they should hang out more, Carrie decided she is not going goth for Devin, right before sighing ashamedly and saying that she would. When Devin shows signs of moving on, Carrie is excited, as she may get the chance to tell him how she feels now.
Dude Buggies[]
Carrie is glad that Devin made it through all of the stages of heartbreak, and decides now that he’s over Shelley, all she needs is the right moment to tell him how she feels. Devin admits he’s now over Shelley, and that there’s only one thing he’s focused on, which causes Carrie to blush, before he quickly says it’s winning the race, rather than what she was expecting. As their taxi pulls up, Carrie asks Devin if they should take a different one since it looks old and slow, but he insists that a cab’s a cab, and grabs her wrist. Devin chooses buggies for the Either/Or, leading to Carrie questioning what she wants. Carrie decides that she’s tired of Devin, as she believes he needs to listen to her more, and they switch challenges. When Carrie is missing, Devin runs around looking for her, and realizes she’s his best friend, and he loves her. Meanwhile, Carrie starts losing interest in Devin and decides to get over him, and believes now she’s been wasting all those years on him and that she needs to move on. Devin tries to confess to her, but she turns him down, saying there’s no time. After their team comes in last, Devin apologizes, and starts talking about how he realized something, right before Don interrupts him, announcing it’s a non-elimination round. When Carrie celebrates, she accidentally knocks Devin over.
El Bunny Supremo[]
Devin realizes that he was too caught up with Carrie to see how awesome Carrie was. Devin tried asking Carrie if she wanted to sit on his knee, and if she’s still mad about the events of the previous episode. She isn’t mad, but chooses her own seat. Devin awkwardly flirts with her, before facepalming, embarrassed with himself. To impress Carrie, Devin insists on jumping. She reminds him that he’s afraid of heights, but he wants to do it just to show her he can do it. She then tells Devin to eat the pepper, and he promises to eat the hottest pepper. Carrie decided if Devin were that sweet to her two days ago she might’ve thought it meant something, but now she knows better and it’s good to be free of him. As Devin hesitates to eat the pepper, Carrie tries to motivate him. Devin eats the hottest pepper to impress her, but it doesn’t go as planned, and she asks if he’s okay. As even the medium pepper gets to Devin, Carrie tells him to just try the mild one.
Ca-Noodling[]
As Devin struggles to read the travel tip due to the events of the last episode, he tells Carrie to read it and runs off to find them a taxi. Devin confirms he doesn’t want Carrie to know about his eyesight problem, because he’s trying to impress her, before telling her that he “like-likes her.” Devin accidentally grabs Stephanie, due to mistaking her for Carrie. Carrie and Devin have a brief disagreement as to whether they should team with Ryan and Stephanie. Devin comes to the realization that he keeps messing up with Carrie, and decides to prove he’s her hero. As Devin falls into the water, Carrie watches with a shocked expression. As their team completes the challenge, Carrie has a discussion with Emma and Kitty about everything going on lately with her and Devin. Devin attempts to impress Carrie by catching what he thought was a big fish. After realizing his mistake, Devin decides to use eye drops so he can see clearly, and potentially rock Carrie’s heart too. As the two travel through the tunnels, Devin panics over the spiders and grabs onto Carrie’s leg. When she sees this, he responds, making her think he was only checking to make sure no spiders were crawling up her leg. Carrie thanks him, but continues onwards. The two awkwardly get stuck in between a crevice and insist on the other going first.
The two continue onwards, but now Devin is even more insistent on telling her how he feels. Devin starts, saying he knows what it really wants, and that it isn’t Shelley. Carrie interrupts him when the two find the Don Box. Devin signals Brody, Emma, Geoff, and Kitty, but Carrie quickly covers his mouth, as she was only asking him if they should alert the other teams rather than asking him to actually do it. Devin once again looks back on how he can’t avoid embarrassing himself when he tries to impress her. The Best Friends hug each other after they’re saved by the Surfers from elimination, but quickly end the hug because of Devin’s sweat. Carrie asks Devin what she was trying to tell her back in the tunnels, before Ryan interrupts them.
How Deep Is Your Love[]
As the two ride in the taxi, Devin tries to tell Carrie he loves her. He instead says that he likes unibrows. He awkwardly tries playing this off when Carrie appears confused and somewhat disappointed by this. The Best Friends discuss whether they should stick with Emma and Kitty, although Carrie appears to be distracted by Ryan, as the two are now closer friends. The Best Friends team fights the Daters for the lead, although Carrie is reluctant to. After the two finish the challenge, Carrie is surprised with Devin’s display of upper body strength.
Darjeel With It[]
Devin once again considers telling Carrie how he feels about her. He ends up saying he loves utensils, and she leaves. Devin realizes how hard it may be to confess his love for her. As the Best Friends make their way to the front of the train, Devin again tries to confess to Carrie. The two stare lovingly at each other, right before a goat rams Devin in the crotch. Devin confesses he thought he would get kicked in the kiwis, but the goat was a surprise. Carrie comes back for Devin, asking if he’s ready to try again. The Best Friends now travel with the Sisters, and Carrie cries to Emma about how Devin was barely talking to her anymore, and how she was sick of the awkward small talk. She admits she isn’t over him, as she keeps crying. The Sisters confront Devin about his relationship with Carrie, and he realizes that everything may fall into place if he simply told her how much he loves her. The Best Friends move closer, and Devin tries to confess, before Devin falls off due to a bump on the rails. Carrie quickly runs back for him. Carrie quickly picks up Devin after the rhino runs him over, and helps him to the Chill Zone.
Last Tango in Buenos Aires[]
The final four receive their tips and head for their next destination: Buenos Aires, Argentina. Devin is convinced that nothing will go wrong, which causes Carrie to worry that he may have jinxed them. She does not have to wait long to get her answer, as an elephant, that has blocked the road, takes a seat on the taxi that the Best Friends are in. Devin makes another attempt to confess his feelings for Carrie, but becomes nervous and accidentally spills his hot tea on himself. Kitty urges him to tell Carrie soon. Devin is fairly confident that he will lead his team to victory in the challenge, because of the dance lessons he took with his ex-girlfriend, Shelley. However, he ends up accidentally injuring Carrie during their dance. Devin starts to apologize but makes the mistake of mentioning Shelley, which causes Carrie to snap and take charge of the team. Under her leadership, the Best Friends manage to do the steps of the dance without any hiccups.
Back at the ranch, Carrie becomes worried about her and Devin's fate as she sees their elimination as likely. Shortly after, Devin captures the emu and it goes down in a puddle of mud, that splashes onto his partner, who is standing nearby. He asks about the whereabouts of the other teams and a dejected Carrie tells him that they are the last to finish this leg, at least to her knowledge. Devin stops her from carrying on and takes the moment to confess his feelings for her, which she reciprocates. The two embrace and have their first kiss, but are interrupted by the Sisters who pass them while being chased by their emu. Realizing they are still in the race, the Best Friends head for the Chill Zone. As the Best Friends leave via helicopter, Carrie reminisces over the good times they had during the race and reiterates her love for Devin. She hears Devin utter Shelley's name in a muffled voice and tells him to stop talking so that he can rest.
Trivia[]
- This is the only team in Ridonculous Race to be eliminated other than coming in last place of a leg. In their case, they were removed from the Race in Last Tango in Buenos Aires due to Devin's injuries. Their elimination is also unique as they are the second-to-last team to reach the Chill Zone and the episode taking place in a non-elimination episode.
