Joining Dr. Kelly is Justin Strekal, the Political Director for NORML<\/a> (The National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws<\/em>) to discuss pending federal efforts to legalize cannabis and how the issue is playing out by candidates on both sides of the aisle in the upcoming midterm elections.<\/p>\n

We can all agree that one of the uniting political issues of our generation is that more Americans than ever before now believe that cannabis should be legalized, and that people should have access to cannabis for medical and recreational use without penalty or risk of jail.<\/p>\n

In today’s show we will discuss impending proposals in Congress for changes in Federal Scheduling, candidate scorecards on cannabis in the upcoming midterm elections, and check in with Canada, our neighbors to the North, who have successfully implemented Full Legalization as of October 15th 2018!<\/p>\n

We will also review important ballot initiatives for medical\/recreational cannabis in four key states:

\nMissouri (Amendment 2)
\nNorth Dakota (Measure 3)
\nUtah (Proposition 2)<\/p>\n

\n\nAs the “High” Holiday of the Cannabis Calendar (4\/20!) is upon us, Dr. Kelly invites NORML’s<\/a> Deputy Director Paul Armentano to share with us his thoughts on the current state of cannabis legalization, policy and scientific efficacy in the US in 2017! What does this year hold for legal cannabis in America? Remember that 4-19 is “Take Action Day” for cannabis reform day, and you can find out more here: norml.org\/act<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n
While more Americans than ever before <\/a>favor the legalization of both recreational and medical cannabis, and over 30 states currently have legal medical dispensary systems, cannabis remains firmly on the DEA’s Federal Schedule 1, classified to have “no accepted medical value.”<\/p>\n
Adding to this untenable duality is our new President and Attorney General <\/a>offering confusing and innacurate messages <\/a>about the plant, and about federal involvement in state sanctioned marijuana programs. Today, Mr. Armentano addresses what he describes as the “ignorance and political apathy on the part of lawmakers, and political inertia that continues to maintain this \u2018flat earth’ policy<\/em>” regarding federal legalization and scheduling.<\/p>\n
But what does the science and research really show? Mr. Armentano shares with Dr. Kelly today some of the common misconceptions<\/a> about cannabis, as well on going research on its public health benefits (including helping curb the opiate epidemic<\/a>). We also discuss a recent literature review <\/a>of over 10,000 studies on cannabis shows its efficacy in treating conditions like chronic pain, nausea, epilepsy, MS and more.<\/p>\n

His writing and research have appeared in over 750 publications, scholarly and\/or peer-reviewed journals, as well as in more than a dozen textbooks and anthologies. He is a regulator contributor to TheHill.com as well as to numerous other print and online publications, including Freedom Leaf and Alternet.org. Mr. Armentano is the co-author of the book Marijuana is Safer: So Why Are We Driving People to Drink? which has been licensed and translated internationally. 2. Pumpkin Tribute <3<\/h3>\nNo write-up on\u00a0 Sonic Bloom could be complete with a mention of the special tribute to Nicolas \u201cPumpkin\u201d Alvarado<\/a>, who passed away earlier this year. Following in the footsteps of Desert Hearts, Lucidity and Lightning in a Bottle, Sonic Bloom is honoring Pumpkin with a set on same day, set time and stage that Pumpkin played last year, with a tribute set by Everyman.<\/p>\n

Droppin\u2019 Knowledge Bombs<\/h3>\nThis year\u2019s Sonic Bloom offers a dynamic range of opportunities for learning and expansion, such as many types of yoga and body flow, belly-dancing, hooping, Qi-Gong, slacklining, as well as workshops on flower essences, tea ceremonies, meditation, intention, and Native traditions. There are also learning experiences galore on topics like the Unified Field Theory, the \u2018Force,\u2019 permaculture, spiritual laws, magnetism and more. Presenters include some of my favorites, like Adam Apollo<\/a>, Aztlan, Android Jones<\/a>, Michael Garfield<\/a>, Jamie Janover<\/a> and so many more! 4. Greening the Festival<\/h3>\nDid you know that a large portion of this year\u2019s festival is being powered by solar energy? Or that the Permaculture Action Network will be doing a Permaculture Action Day<\/a> on the morning of the first day of the festival, June 16^{th<\/sup> at 11am, where they will be transitioning over to the local community farm in Walsenburg?<\/p>\n}
During the festival, the Pe<\/a>rmaculture Action Hub will be hosting workshops and skill-shares all weekend, and you can also hang around their hub and get in-depth with some of Colorado’s best teachers and designers.<\/p>\n
Also don’t forget about the “Art that Feeds<\/a>” Food Drive in partnership with Conscious Alliance- <\/a>The first patrons who donate\u00a020 non-perishable food items or a suggested monetary donation\u00a0<\/strong>will receive a FREE limited-edition screen print created by one of Sonic Bloom’s very talented artists! All of the donations will benefit the local community and be donated to the Dorcas Food Bank in\u00a0Walsenburg, CO!<\/a><\/p>\n
Sonic Bloom is also a pack-it-in, pack-it-out event, encouraging participants to bring only what they need and leave with all of their trash, use reusable water bottles, dishes and utensils, and bring separate trash bags for their trash, recycling and compost.<\/p>\n
5. Stunning Visual Artistry<\/h3>\nIn addition to the ear-gasms from the music, you are probably going to experiences multiple eye-gasms from the vast array of quality visual art in every direction, from live art, to VJs,\u00a0 art installations and live performances.<\/p>\n<\/a> Some of the most talented visionary artists in the world be live-painting on site (including the amazing Randall Roberts,<\/a> Morgan Mandala<\/a>, Martina Hoffman <\/a>and Dela<\/a>), and we will be treated to one-of-a-kind performances like Phaedroid, the collaboration where visual artist Android Jones<\/a> projects visiuals on live dancer Phaedrana Jones.<\/p>\n
We will be also be blissing out to VJ performances from Aeonchild, Pickles Visuals,<\/a> Illuminated Dimensions<\/a> and Annie Stardust<\/a>, and get to take in some epic art installations like Hin-Han, Guardian of the Milky Way<\/a>.<\/p>\n

7. Really, REALLY easy to get to<\/h3>\nSometimes getting to a festival can be a tricky ordeal. Thankfully for Sonic bloom, all you need to know is one thing: Exit 64 off 1-25. You go to a transformational festival, and you come back a different person. Or at least, you come back with a fresh perspective and renewed energy. Maybe you\u2019ve found your life path. Maybe you met your soul mate. Maybe you saw the best performance of your life. \u00a0Maybe you discovered a new healing modality. Maybe you had your first out of body experience. Maybe you left your comfort zone and found new ways to cope with it. Maybe you found your tribe. Maybe.. all of the above\u2026?<\/p>\n
I can definitely relate.. I\u2019ve had numerous life changing experiences at festivals that have been documented in these articles about Lighting in a Bottle 2012<\/a> and Lucidity 2014<\/a>.<\/p>\n
So what is it about transformational festivals that helps evolve our consciousness?<\/em><\/h4>\n<\/a>This week on Lucid Planet Radio,<\/a> I sat down with Jonah Hass, the co-founder and Marketing Director of Lucidity Festival<\/a>, to find out his thoughts about this. In fact, it is BY DESIGN<\/span>.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think it comes down to the intention of the producers. It flows through everything that we do.\u201d \u2013 Jonah Hass <\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
\u00a0<\/em>Focused Intention <\/strong><\/h3>\nSome event producers have the intention of throwing a really good party, and some events are held with the sole purpose of generating revenue. But for truly transformative events like Lucidity, the intention is so much more complex than just money and partying, and you can feel it from the minute your step onto the land.<\/p>\n<\/a>Jonah tells me that when Lucidity was birthed, the local community came together and brainstormed the core values that they wanted to produce an event around. These 7 core values <\/a>permeate everything about the event:<\/p>\n
\nParticipation and Immersion in the creative process<\/em><\/li>\n
Personal Growth and Global Healing<\/em><\/li>\n
Awake and Aware Consciousness<\/em><\/li>\n
Environmental and Social Responsibility<\/em><\/li>\n
Family Fun and Creative Play <\/em><\/li>\n
Communal Reciprocity<\/em><\/li>\nTransparency<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\nPerhaps this approach is not surprising, considering that Lucidity puts a great deal of intention into its meta-narrative<\/em>. In light of the fact that some of our most celebrated stories come in trilogies, Lucidity created its own \u201cmythos<\/em>\u201d (inspired by Joseph Campbell) to describe its six-year story arc. The first three years, Awaken Your Dreams, Totem\u2019s Return<\/em> and Universe<\/em>, were all about individual transformation, while the second three years, Kindred Quest, Crossroads<\/em> and Eudaimonia<\/em>, highlight collective transformation.<\/p>\n<\/a><\/p>\n
In case you were wondering, 2016 marks year 5, Crossroads<\/strong>, which focuses on the collective human present. We are truly standing at the crossroads for humankind, as we look out over the landscape of our species and mother Earth. We see our global human family entangled in a liminal, transitional zone between what was and what will be. Standing together, we can recognize the challenges we face and begin working together to arrive at solutions.<\/em><\/p>\n
Community Integration<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/a><\/p>\n
In addition to the intention set forth by the organizers, the participation in real-life community is a hugely important component of how festivals evolve consciousness. If you are like me, you want to feel like you are truly PART of the event, not only when you are dancing at the main stage but also when you are hanging out back at your tent.
