- On May 25, 2021, it was announced that Noah Galvin and Bria Samoné Henderson were promoted to series regular ahead of Season 5.[4]
- On June 7, 2021, Osvaldo Benavides was promoted to series regular ahead of Season 5.[3] However, Benavides was written off the show after six episodes, for reasons yet to be specified.[5]
- Prior to the release of the fourth season finale, on June 7, 2021 it was confirmed that Antonia Thomas would not return for season 5. Although she said she'd be open to appear as a guest star down the line.[6]
- On July 3, 2021, it was confirmed that filming will take place from August 16, 2021 - April 29, 2022. (These dates may change due to COVID-19).[7]
- On July 15, it was announced that the season would premiere on September 27, 2021.[8]
- On August 23, 2021, Deadline reported that Dear Evan Hansen star and Tony Award winner Rachel Bay Jones will be a recurring character in Season 5.[9]
