"Game over man, game over!"

Master Mode is an option that can be selected during world creation. It further increases the difficulty of the game beyond Expert Mode, as well as offering Master Mode–exclusive items. Like Expert Mode, Master Mode begins the moment the Master Mode world has been created, and cannot be altered after that by the player. In Journey Mode, Master Mode can be toggled using the difficulty slider.

All Expert Mode changes also apply to Master Mode, including increased drop chances, modified AIs, etc. All Expert-exclusive content is available in Master Mode.

General[]

  • Most enemies have roughly 50% more health and damage and 10% more knockback resistance than in Expert Mode (thus three times as much health and damage and 20% more knockback resistance than in Classic Mode).
    • For example, a Blue Slime has the following stats in the different modes:
Stat Classic mode icon Classic Expert mode icon Expert Master mode icon Master
Max. health 25 50 75
Damage 7 14 21
KB resistance 0% 10% 20%
  • Bosses gain flat 50% increase in damage and 27.5% in health to their Expert Mode values.
  • Like in Expert Mode, weaker enemies may get an additional multiplier to the above stats upon entering Hardmode and another after Plantera has been defeated.

Player[]

  • Players will drop all of their coins upon death instead of 50% / 75%.
  • Players gain an additional accessory slot that is only active while in a Master Mode world. This stacks with the Demon Heart, resulting in the maximum attainable slots to be seven.
  • Damage taken is fully reduced by the player's defense value instead of 50% / 75%.
  • The following debuffs have 250% duration (instead of Expert mode's 200% duration) when inflicted on players:[1]

Master-exclusive items[]

  • Bosses defeated in Master Mode drop their Treasure Bag, which contains the Expert-exclusive content of the boss. In addition, they drop Master-exclusive items separately, which have the Rarity level: Fiery red rarity.
    • Bosses always drop their respective relic, a shiny statue resembling the boss.
    • They also have a 25% chance of dropping an item which summons a pet, light pet, or mount that either resembles the boss or is closely themed after it.
    • Finally, the Eye of Cthulhu always drops 0x33's Aviators, which – prior to 1.4.0.1 – could only be obtained by defeating it in an Expert world with a Hardcore character.
  • There's also one Master-exclusive items that is not dropped from bosses — Resplendent DessertResplendent Dessert.

Trivia[]

  • Master Mode's descriptive text, "Game over man, game over! ", is a quote from the 1986 American science fiction action movie Aliens.
  • In the world selection menu, the text for a Master Mode world is red. Journey Mode world names are pink, Classic world names are white, and Expert world names are orange.
  • Master Mode was originally intended to be unlocked by beating Expert Mode, but it was later decided that it would be made available to all players.
  • It has been suggested and rumored that Master Modes Relics would give buffs to the player in Master Mode worlds, but this feature has not been implemented as of yet.
  • When creating either a "getfixedboi" or a "for the worthy" seed with Master Mode, Master Mode becomes a new secret difficulty, known as Legendary Mode.
