An alternative crafting ingredient is an item that can be used in place of another item in a crafting recipe. On this wiki, in the recipe section, substitutes are listed as "Any <groupname>", or after an "or", where it will list alternate item(s) that can be used. Below is a list of all potential alternative crafting ingredients. Note that while these items can be substituted in many recipes in which they appear, they may not be able to be substituted in all of them. See an item's page for details on which recipes an item can be substituted in.
There are several item groups.[1] It is possible to "mix" items from same group in order to conserve material. This means that, for example, a Chest could be crafted with 8 Wood, 1 Iron Bar, and 1 Lead Bar, despite the player not having the required amount in total Iron or Lead alone.
They are listed as "Any <groupname>" in ingredients list of recipes.

Substitutable ingredients[]
Some recipes contain substitutable ingredients, such as the Night's Edge (which can be crafted with either a Light's Bane or a Blood Butcherer). Most of them are stored as separate recipes. The rest of them (recipes for Old-gen console, Windows Phone, and 3DS platforms) are listed in "<itemA> or <itemB>" form in ingredients list of recipes. These are listed below.
Substituting items does not work for armor or weapons that are name-specific to their bar.
Tips[]
Using two different but equal bars for the same item can help conserve bars when the player does not have a large supply.
Trivia[]
Dynasty Wood is the only wood that cannot be used in "Any Wood" recipes.
There is an "AnyLunar Fragment" category in the game code that is not used in any recipe. It includes the four Lunar Fragments.[2]
