You can use Google Duo to make video or voice calls. All calls are made through your mobile data plan or a WiFi connection. Calls don't use your mobile minutes. If you use your mobile data, charges may apply.
Before you begin
Start a video or voice call
Make sure you have the latest version of the Duo app and Android 7.0 and up.
- Open the Google Duo app .
- At the top, search contacts or dial a number.
- Tap the contact or number to call.
- Choose an option:
- To make a video call, tap Call.
- To make an audio-only call, tap Voice call .
Use Google Duo on Google Home device
Important: Your Google Assistant language must be set to English US, English UK, Canadian English, or French Canadian.
- On your Android device, open the Duo app .
- At the top of your contact list, tap Call Home.
Google Duo calls any Google Home device youâre signed in to, like Smart Displays with Google Assistant.
Start a group video call
You can have up to 32 participants in a group video call on Google Duo.
Create a group
- Open the Google Duo app .
- At the bottom right, tap New call Create group.
- Choose your contacts.
- Tap Done.
- Optional: Your video is on by default. Tap Video to turn your video off or on.
- Tap Start .
Share a link to start a group call
- Open the Duo app .
- At the bottom right, tap New call Create group.
- Select your contacts.
- Tap Done.
- To share the link or add contacts, tap Copy or Share .
- If the recipient clicks the link on a computer, it opens duo.google.com.
- If the recipient taps the link on mobile and Google Duo is installed, the Google Duo app opens.
- If the recipient taps the link on mobile and Google Duo isnât installed, the link opens Google Duo in Google Play or the App Store.
- Tap Start.
Call an existing group or join a live group call
Important: Child accounts can only join groups if at least one of their contacts is in that group.
- Open the Google Duo app .
- At the bottom right, tap New call.
- Under âGroups,â call a group or join a live group. If âLiveâ is under the group name, the call is live and you can join.
- To call an existing group: Tap the group name or participants Start .
- To join a live group call: Tap the group name or participants Join .
Rename a group, add members, reset a group link, or leave a group
- Open the Google Duo app .
- At the bottom right, tap New Call.
- Under âGroups,â tap a group More options .
- Choose an option and follow the instructions on the screen.
Suspicious groups
If you get a group invite that includes blocked accounts or people outside your contacts, Google Duo marks the group as suspicious. Google Duo wonât give you any information about group members you blocked.
You can join or decline the group. If you join, Google Duo wonât unblock people you blocked.
Remove a group member
- Open the Google Duo app .
- At the bottom right, tap New Call.
- Under âGroups,â tap a group.
- Touch and hold the contact you want to remove.
- Tap Remove from group.
- Optional: You can also block the group member.
Tip: If the person you blocked clicks the original link to rejoin the group, they get a message that the group doesnât exist. The group link is refreshed for everyone else in the group. Learn about blocked numbers in group calls.
Make Google Duo calls from other apps
If your carrier has video calling and you and the person you call:
- Have the same carrier: The call might use your carrierâs video service.
- Have different carriers: The call uses Google Duo.
To use Google Duo with the Phone app, make sure you have version 13.0 and up.
- Open the Phone app .
- Choose a contact History .
- On the bottom, tap Video call .
Tip: Video calls on Google Duo may not be available for every contact.
To use Google Duo with the Contacts app, make sure you have version 2.1 and up.
- Open the Contacts app .
- Open a contactâs info card.
- Tap Video .
To use Google Duo with the Messages app, make sure you have version 2.6 and up.
- Open the Messages app .
- Open a conversation.
- On the top, tap Make a video call .
You can start a Google Duo video call when you say or enter:
- "OK Google, Duo call [name]."
- "OK Google, Video call [name]."
Fix problems with calls
- Make sure you install the latest version of Google Duo.
- Check that you registered Google Duo:
Make sure:
- You have the latest version of the Google Duo app.
- You're connected to WiFi.
- You have a data connection.
