Set up & manage legacy calling in Google Meet

To use Meet legacy calling, previously Duo, you need to add an account. You can also add a phone number.

Business and EDU users:

Onboard as a new user with a personal account

Important: Users who select a personal account when setting up Google Meet for the first time follow these steps to enable legacy calling.

  1. Open the Meet app .
  2. Sign in with your personal Google Account.
    • If your device pre-loads Google Accounts, select the personal account you want to make calls with.
  3. If you want others to reach you through your phone number, enter your phone number and verify.
    • If the number you entered is already associated with a Google Account: It’s automatically verified.
    • If the number you entered isn’t associated with a Google Account: Google Meet texts a code to the number you entered. Carrier text message rates may apply.

Add a legacy calling account

Important: You can associate only one Google Account with a legacy calling account. If you don’t have a legacy calling account already and want to add a legacy calling account:

  1. Tap your Google Account profile picture.
  2. Tap the account with which you want to make legacy calls.
  3. At the top left, tap Menu and then Settings  and then Add (legacy) calling account.
  4. Enter your phone number and verify.

Tips:

  • Once you add your account, people can reach you through both your phone number and Google Account across Google services.
  • If you add your phone number in Meet, people who know your phone number can reach you across Google services. Learn how your phone number is used.
  • You can manage phone numbers associated with your Google Account in your Google Account settings or at myaccount.google.com/phone.

Make changes to your legacy calling account

Change the phone number you use for legacy calls
  1. Tap your Google Account profile picture.
  2. Tap the account with which you want to make legacy calls.
  3. Tap your Google Account profile picture and then Change your phone number and then Add a new number.
    • This capability is still rolling out. If you don’t find this, you need to first remove your calling account and re-add it with a different phone number:
      1. Go to the Menu .
      2. Tap Settings and then Calling account and then Remove Calling Account.
        • This action deletes your Meet legacy call history and messages.
      3. Go back to the Menu .
      4. Tap Settings and then Add Calling and then Add and verify your phone number.
  4. Enter your phone number and verify.
    • If the number you entered is already associated with a Google Account: It’s automatically verified.
    • If the number you entered isn’t associated with a Google Account: Google Meet texts a code to the number you entered. Carrier text message rates may apply.
  5. Tap Continue.

Tip: In some rare cases, it can take up to 24 hours to update the phone number in your legacy calling account. Until this happens, incoming and outgoing calls continue to use your original phone number.

Change the account you use for legacy calls

You can only have one legacy calling account per device. To change the account you use for legacy calling:

  1. Delete your current legacy calling account.
  2. Select the account to which you want to add a legacy calling account.

Delete your legacy calling account:

  1. Open the Meet app .
  2. At the top left, tap Menu and then Settings .
  3. Tap Calling settings (Legacy) and then Calling account and then Remove calling account.
    • This action deletes your Meet legacy call history and messages.
  4. Tap Remove.

Add a new legacy calling account:

  1. After you delete your current legacy account, tap your Google Account Profile picture.
  2. Tap the account with which you want to make legacy calls.
  3. Tap Settings and then Add (legacy) calling account.
  4. Enter your phone number and verify.

Tips:

  • If you switch to an account that doesn't have legacy calling associated with it, you won't have access to messages or legacy features.
  • To access messages or legacy features, you need to switch back to the account associated with legacy calling.
Add a Google Account to a legacy calling account

To add a Google Account to your existing legacy calling account:

  1. Open the Meet app .
  2. At the top right, select your calling account.
  3. At the top left, tap Menu .
  4. Tap Settings and then (legacy) Calling account and then Add account.
  5. Select the Google Account you want to add.
    • If you don't have an account on your device, tap Add account.

Tip: Once you add your account, people can reach you through both your phone number and Google Account across Google services. Learn how your phone number is used.

Add a phone number to the account you use for legacy calling

People who know your phone number can reach you across Google services.

  1. Tap your Google account profile picture.
  2. Tap the account with which you make legacy calls.
  3. Tap Add your phone number.
  4. Enter your phone number and verify.

Tip: In some rare cases, it can take up to 24 hours to add a phone number to your legacy calling account.

Delete your legacy calling account
  1. Open the Google Meet app .
  2. At the top left, tap Menu and then Settings .
  3. Tap Calling settings (Legacy) and then Calling account and then Remove calling account.
    • This action deletes your Meet legacy call history and messages.
    • You can no longer make or receive legacy calls on Meet.
  4. Tap Remove.
To not be reached by phone number, turn off “Better sharing” on Google

Important: This feature is still rolling out and might not be available to you yet.

If you don’t want people to contact you through your phone number, you can unregister it from Meet and other Google services by turning off "Better sharing on Google." Learn how phone numbers on your account are used.

  1. Open the Google Meet app .
  2. Tap your Google Account profile picture and then Manage your Google Account and then Personal info.
  3. Under “Contact info,” tap PHONE.
  4. Tap the phone number you don’t want Google apps to use to reach you.
  5. Turn off Better sharing on Google.

Important: If you turn off “Better sharing on Google”:

  • People can’t reach you for video calls and messages.
  • You don’t get notifications through Google services when people send photos and more to your number.
  • You get SMS notifications instead.
