Gemstones

Gemstones are the core components of any Gem. They appear as literal gemstones in various cuts, shapes, and colors, located randomly on any Gem's physical form.

Description

The gemstones are, in essence, the Gem's core. According to Pearl in "What Are Gems?", their physical bodies are merely a hologram with mass from within the gemstone, much like their weapons and outfits. Garnet states in "Steven the Sword Fighter" that if the physical body (which is just an "illusion" made of light with mass) of a Gem is severely damaged or injured, it retreats to its gemstone to regenerate and project a new body form. All the Crystal Gems besides Steven have been shown to regenerate.

Three Rubies.

In contrast, any slight damage to the gemstone, such as a crack, results in a serious and often crippling injury to the Gem. It can interfere with their powers, as Lapis Lazuli is unable to summon her water wings while her gemstone is cracked in "Ocean Gem". It also interferes with their ability to manifest/control their physical bodies as Amethyst lost more and more control of hers as her gemstone is continuously cracked in "An Indirect Kiss". It may also interfere with the physical form itself. In "Bubbled", "Eyeball"'s gemstone is cracked, resulting in her hand manifesting and unmanifesting several times. Shattering a Gemstone effectively kills the Gem (although it retains some properties, such as the Gem Shards in "Frybo" and "Secret Team", the Smoke Monster in "Together Breakfast" and all the gem shards they have encountered).

During Gem Fusion, all participants' gemstones shift colors to match each other. If the participants of the fusion are the same Gem type, the resulting fusion is just a larger version of the Gem.

Multiple Gems with the same gemstone may exist. Gemstone placement appears to vary from Gem to Gem, even if they are of the same gemstone. Most Gems of the same gemstone will have the same cut to their gemstone; however, some Gems (such as the Diamonds, Pearls, Jasper and one of the Zoo Amethysts) are exceptions to this. Gems of the same gemstone can have different summoned weapons.

Gemstones are generally locked in a specific location on the Gem's construct body, with even fusions maintaining the gemstones that compose them in the same anatomy. However, they can be oriented differently, as with Pink Diamond shifting her abdominally-located gemstone from a lateral to a dorso-ventral position as Rose Quartz, or Spinel flipping her gem upside down upon her second regeneration.

Some gemstones (like Pearl's and Amethyst's) have rings that go around the edge or middle of the gem. Some rings don't follow the gemstone's color palette (like Pearl's light-blue ring). Other gemstones (like Peridot's and Spinel's) don't have said rings. The reason for this is unknown.

Abilities

Gems can manifest things from within their gemstone, with the most important being their personal weapons and their physical bodies. Pearl, Garnet, Peridot and Spinel have the ability to store and withdraw objects (such as a roll of tape, temple key, EMP device or a Gem Rejuvenator respectively) in their gemstone, but it is currently unknown if that ability is unique to them or if all Gems share it.

Gem bubbles have a stasis-like effect on gemstones; when "bubbled" by another Gem, the gemstone is prevented from regenerating/manifesting its physical body or weapon, essentially being imprisoned indefinitely until the bubble bursts.

Gemstones also find use in Gem technology. They are used as power sources for various objects such as Lapis' gemstone being used to power the magical mirror in "Mirror Gem". A corrupted gemstone also powered the mechanical apparatus in the Pyramid Temple in "Serious Steven".

Culture

As one would expect, the gemstone of each Gem is a core aspect of Gem culture. The Gems are not only named after their gemstone but are also recognized by other Gems by it. In "The Return", Jasper showed that she had known of Rose Quartz before the events of the episode and, due to Steven having inherited his mother's gemstone, she instantly thinks he is his mother shape-shifted into a weak, human boy which confuses and infuriates her. Individuality is a rare concept among Gems, as there is evidently little to differentiate Gems (aside from gemstone type) other than a serial number based on facet and cut.

It also seems to be customary for a Gem to keep their gemstones exposed, as all full uncorrupted Gems seen in the series have had theirs at least partially visible, to the point of altering the Homeworld uniform.

Unfused Gemstones

	Pearl's gemstone is located in the center of her forehead. The gemstone is smooth with no facets. As seen when she is regenerating in "Steven the Sword Fighter", it has a light blue ring around the edge which is usually hidden inside Pearl's forehead.
	Amethyst's gemstone is located on her chest. It has a hexagonal facet. As seen in "Reformed", it has a light purple (blue violet in "Crack the Whip") ring around the edge which is normally hidden inside Amethyst's body unless she is regenerating.
	Ruby's gemstone is located on the palm of her left hand. It has a square facet. As seen in "The Return" and the flashback in "Jail Break", it has a light red (dark red after "Together Alone") ring around the edge (normally hidden inside her hand) and is flatter on the back.	"The Return"
	Sapphire's gemstone is located on the palm of her right hand. It has a triangular facet. As seen in "The Return" and the flashback in "Jail Break", it has a light blue ring around the edge (normally hidden inside her hand) and is flatter on the back.
	Lapis Lazuli's gemstone is located on her back, between her shoulder blades. Her teardrop-shaped gemstone is smooth with no facets. As seen in "Mirror Gem", it has a silver ring around the edge (usually hidden inside her back).	"Mirror Gem"
	Peridot's gemstone is located in the center of her forehead. Her gemstone is a triangle with facets around the edge, but they are hidden behind her forehead when she's active.	"Warp Tour"

	Jasper's gemstone is located where her nose would be, in the center of her face. Her gemstone is cut with a point that is the conversion of the other three facets. The appearance of Jasper's gemstone remains the same even after her corruption in "Earthlings" and her shattering in "Fragments" (though it has changed in color after her corruption).	"The Return"

	Pink Diamond's gemstone is located on her navel. It is in the shape of an upside-down, five-sided diamond with multiple facets on the bottom. 	White Diamond's gemstone is located in the center of her forehead. It is in the shape of a right-side up, five-sided diamond.	"Legs From Here to Homeworld"

	Holly Blue Agate's gemstone is located on the back of her head. It has an inverted kite-shaped facet, and is shaped like a teardrop.	"Gem Heist"
	The defective Carnelian's gemstone is located on her left shoulder. It is red with a hexagonal facet. It also has a ring around the edges.	"That Will Be All"
	All real Rose Quartzes shown have this pink gemstone with a featured pentagonal facet. It resembles Rose Quartz's gemstone due to her, as Pink Diamond, repositioning it to make it look like another gemstone. As seen in "That Will Be All", they all have light pink rings around the edges, usually hidden inside the bodies of various Rose Quartzes.
	Aquamarine's gemstone is located underneath her left eye. It is light-blue and teardrop-shaped.	"Are You My Dad?"
	The two unfused Topazes' gemstones are located (respectively) on the left and right sides of their head. It is circular and yellow and has large centered circular facet and small triangular facets in between. Their gemstones resemble that of the Lighthouse Gem Monster, with the only difference being color.
	The defending Zircon's blue gemstone has a rectangular shape and a four-faceted facet. Her gemstone is located on her upper chest; it has a rectangular shape and a four-faceted facet.	"The Trial"
	The prosecuting Zircon's yellow gemstone has a rectangular shape and a four-faceted facet. Her gemstone is located on her upper chest; it has a rectangular shape and a four-faceted facet.
	Padparadscha's peach-colored gemstone is located on the back of her right hand, featuring a triangular facet. The front and back are symmetrical. It is an octahedron, specifically a truncated trigonal dipyramid.	"Off Colors"
	The Rutile Twins' red "Y"-shaped conjoined gemstone is located on their navel. Presumably, from conjoining during formation, the gemstone is in two connected perpendicular sections.
	Emerald's gemstone is located where her right eye would otherwise be. It is dark-green, rectangular, and has facets around the edge.	"Lars of the Stars"
	The yellow-green Jade's gemstone is located on her right cheek. It resembles a cabochon, a gemstone that has been polished, but not faceted.	"Together Alone"
	The blue-green Jade's gemstone is located on her left cheek. It resembles a cabochon, a gemstone that has been polished, but not faceted.
	Snowflake Obsidian's gemstone is located on the back of her right hand. It is unfaceted and round in shape.	"Change Your Mind"
	Blue Lace Agate's gemstone is located on her navel. It is round in shape and unfaceted.
	Zebra Jasper's gemstone is diamond-shaped and unfaceted. It is located on her chest.

• The real life 'meanings' of gemstones often correspond with some Gems' personalities.
  • Amethyst is a stone associated with love. The stone itself is associated with Dionysus, the god of wine and intoxication. Amethyst is not a clear thinker but is fun-loving.
    • This is also shown with the other Amethysts shown, who are good-natured.
  • Pearl is a stone associated with purity. Pearl is mature, wise, and perfectionistic.
  • Garnet is a stone that protects from evil. Garnet is the most powerful of the Crystal Gems and often saves the day. She is also the current de facto leader of the Crystal Gems.
    • Rubies are also associated with protection, and most Rubies are guards, therefore fulfilling a role of protection.
    • Sapphires on the other hand, are associated with wisdom and mind healing. Sapphire is shown to be very mindful and intelligent.
  • Rose Quartz is a stone associated with love and joy. Steven is the most caring, and upbeat of the Gems, and Rose Quartz was very loving and had a joyful personality.
  • Smoky Quartz is a stone that turns negativity into positivity, fosters cooperation, and helps wishes and personal goals to become true; Smoky Quartz is made when Amethyst accepts Steven's help by turning all her negative traits as a "runt" into actual positives, and thanks to them, Amethyst's goal of defeating Jasper is made true.
  • Lapis Lazuli is a stone associated with gods and power. She is a powerful Gem, nearly capable of defeating the Crystal Gems while controlling the Earth's entire ocean, in the midst of a cracked gem.
  • Peridot is a stone associated with the heart chakra, bringing balance and relieving stress. Peridot is shown to be level-headed and calculated, if not passionate about her work. She is also physically resilient.
  • Jasper is a stone associated with compassion and maternity, ironic considering Jasper's savage and aggressive temperament.
    • However, the gemstone is also associated with fire, so this could lead to Jasper's ill-temper.
      • Despite this, the other Jaspers shown were good-natured much like the Amethysts, so Jasper might be an exception.
  • Zircons, in real life, are known for "repelling negative energy", somewhat fitting with the defending Zircon's lawyer occupation.
  • Diamonds are associated with innocence and integrity of moral values. These traits run counter to the portrayal of most of the Diamond Authority but fits Pink Diamond and her son/reincarnation Steven.
    • Pink diamonds are also said to enhance creativity. Pink Diamond was said to be creative, and Steven can be very creative as well.
      • Pink diamonds also can clear malevolence from their owners, which fits with Steven/Pink Diamond wishing to uncorrupt gems. 
  • Spinels are gems said to dispel negative energy by purifying it, and it is also known to increase creativity and preserve youthfulness. While the former could be analogous to Spinel's positive and goofy (former) personality, the latter might be an ironic jab towards her use of the Gem Rejuvenator.
    • It can also be analogous to her being Pink Diamond's best friend/playmate.
• Although the gemstone being exposed is largely cultural, given that some corrupted Gems have had them internally, Steven once expressed discomfort as a baby when his baby onesie covered his gemstone.

  • Jasper's gemstone is placed over her nose; she is very self-centered and primal; it may also indicate being "hard-nosed", or determined and tough-minded.
  • Yellow and Blue Diamond have their gems on their chests, as they are considered "matriarchs" and have a high placement in the caste.
    • Additionally, Blue Diamond's placement may refer to her merciful side.

  • Holly Blue Agate's gem is located on the back of her head, possibly alluding to the saying "to have eyes in the back of your head" (indicating her desire to keep everything under control, even when her back is turned).
  • Aquamarine's tear-shaped gemstone is under her eye; this false tear shows her deceitful nature disguised by her innocent appearance. This tear similarity is even jokingly and sarcastically referenced by Aquamarine in "Stuck Together".
    • In real life culture, a teardrop tattoo placed under the eye can often mean the wearer has killed someone or that they or a loved one has spent time in prison.
  • Topaz has her components' gemstones on her ears; she tends to obey the caste system and silently listen to Aquamarine's orders. In "Stuck Together", Topaz also intently listens to Lars and Steven's emotional conversation, causing her to open up and go against Aquamarine's orders.
  • White Diamond's gemstone is on her forehead, representing her high rank amongst all gems.  Similarly to Pearl, it could also indicate her perfectionist mindset.
  • Spinel's gemstone is on her chest, she was formerly fun-loving and passionate, but upon her being abandoned became heartbroken and angered.

• Although all classified as gemstones, other materials have been called such. Examples are Bismuth's gem, which is a metal, and the Glass Ghost's gem, which is a glass shard.
  • However, both are considered gems for different reasons; glass is considered clear enough to be a gem, and bismuth has been found within quartz crystal.
• Many gemstones have had minor changes to them throughout the series. These changes occur when a gem is poofed, during the beginning of corruption, or between a season and none of these options occur. These changes also seem to be permanent, since they appear permanently after the said change. The reason for these changes is unknown.
  • Amethyst's gemstone color palette has been changed from a purple palette to a violet and purple palette. This change occured in the beginning of Season 2, but has been seen multiple times at the end of Season 1B.
  • Pearl's gemstone color palette has changed from a light-peach color to a light-pink color. This change occured after Pearl reformed in Change Your Mind.
  • Steven's gemstone color palette has changed from a red-pink palette to a magenta palette. This change occured in the beginning of Steven Universe: The Movie.
  • Jasper's only gemstone change was the color of the bottom facet, which went from a tan color to a yellow-orange color. This change occured right when Jasper became corrupted in Earthlings.
  • Lapis Lazuli's only gemstone change was about the lighter blue color in her gemstone, which repositioned itself from the bottom-right of the gem to the top-right of the gem. This change happened when she appeared in Change Your Mind.
