Plot summary[]
After learning of Darth Wredd's plot to attack Empress Marasiah Fel, the young Imperial Knight Jao Assam and his junk dealer friend Ania Solo embark on a quest to hunt down the rogue Sith. Their hunt leads them to the lawless Calamari system, which has become the stronghold of a pirate syndicate led by the Sith Darth Luft. Darth Luft has lured many Mon Calamari and Quarren refugees back to Dac under the pretext of a project to restore Dac, whose oceans had been poisoned by the One Sith during the Second Imperial Civil War. Jao, Ania, and their Mon Calamari and Quarren guides Luen and Tikin are dumped in an escape pod into the poisoned oceans of Dac and face imminent death if they come into contact with even a single drop of the poisoned oceans. Jao's adopted communications droid manages to transmit a distress signal.
This signal is picked up by Ania's companions—the Mon Calamari engineer Sauk and the assassin droid AG-37. They fly AG-37's freighter to Dac and dive into the planet's oceans. With much difficulty, Sauk manages to use the freighter's grappling hook to grab Ania's escape pod. Meanwhile on Coruscant, the Imperial Knight Master Yalta Val receives Jao's transmission. He brings the plight of the Mon Calamari and Quarren before the Galactic Federation Triumvirate leadership but is rebuffed by Empress Fel. Fel's apathy is criticized by Admiral Gar Stazi, who argues that the Triumvirate has an obligation to assist the Mon Calamari and Quarren.
Meanwhile, Ania and her companions land in an abandoned hangar bay. While Jao wants to take the fight to the Sith, Ania and AG-37 recommend that they return to the freighter and wait for the arrival of reinforcements. Meanwhile, the Quarren Tikin is unwilling to antagonize the Sith because he does not want to endanger his son Tilin. Unable to resolve their differences, the three groups part company. Jao and Tikin return to the shipyards to fight the Sith and to save his son respectively. Meanwhile, Ania, Sauk, AG-37, and Luen return to AG-37's freighter. Back on Coruscant, Master Val and Admiral Stazi organize a task force to liberate the shipyards.
Back in the Mon Calamari Shipyards, Tikin tries to save his son by revealing the presence of the Imperial Knight Jao Assam. However, Darth Luft kills him instead; sparking a slave uprising. Reinvigorated by the arrival of the Imperial Knight, the Mon Calamari and Quarren slaves attack their captors. Under attack, Darth Luft orders his men to kill their captives and to execute their families. He then engages Jao in a lightsaber duel. Meanwhile, AG-37's freighter is attacked by several pirate starfighters. However, their pursuers are destroyed by a Galactic Triumvirate task force under the command of Admiral Stazi and Master Val.
