Plot summary[]
In the Republic era at Jabba’s Palace, an up-and-coming Rodian bounty hunter named Greedo attempts to get inside but is told that he’s not on the list by the gatekeeper droid. Greedo asks for it to check again as he was sent by Balgog and has just finished the Yurno job, but he hacks into the distracted droid, giving himself access to the palace. Greedo reminds himself that if he wants to get in on the ace jobs, he needs to get in good with the big boss, and so he came bearing gifts. Once in the throne room, Greedo notices that the audience is amazed at Jabba’s new prize, the Sunburst Gem. Wanting to make Jabba the Hutt notice him, Greedo approaches Jabba with a gift, but he’s tackled by Jabba’s thugs who think he’s after Jabba and the Sunburst Gem. Greedo’s gift of Billging Grubs, Jabba’s favourite snack, is spilt all over the floor, and Greedo is laughed at for not making a good impression, and is called a harmless fool by Jabba. Jabba tells his majordomo Bib Fortuna to let Greedo live as he merely wanted to be near his greatness and gaze upon the gem, and Fortuna gives Greedo some advice: make a bigger name for himself before approaching Jabba again, as he’s been noticed but not in a good way.
Needing to work his way up from the bottom, Greedo hung around the palace trying to get noticed and attempted to pick up odd jobs, but was far too eager and continued to struggle. He was a broke nobody, barely scraping by and living day to day at the bottom. One day, Greedo takes heavy interest in a new headliner at the palace, a singer named Bennun Glau, and he attempts to make her his gal. Greedo narrates that he should’ve known she was trouble from the minute he saw her, but he was a young fool. She made him feel bold, and while she had no idea that he existed, Greedo was in love. Greedo would always come to the palace to hear her sing, but Jabba also thought of her as precious, just like his Sunburst Gem since she’s a jewel. One night after one of her shows, Greedo visits Glau in her room and she mentions that she’s seen him in the crowd. He states that he’d do anything for her, and so Greedo would go on to do various strange jobs for her, and he never questioned where she was getting the credits from. With the credits, Greedo is able to purchase a ship as well as flowers to let Bennun know just how much he appreciated her for everything. However, one night everything went south when Greedo returned to her room to find her standing over the unconscious body of one of Jabba’s thugs. Bennun lies to Greedo, saying that he came out of nowhere and claims that she’s scared, but Greedo claims that he won’t let anything happen to her. With his ship ready, the two put plans into motion with Greedo taking care of the guard while Bennun will meet him in the Mos Eisley Food Court in an hour.
Greedo drags the unconscious guard’s body to a cave in the desert and pays a group of an arachnid species to keep him out of sight for a few days, and meanwhile Jabba the Hutt is delivered to Mos Eisley on a litter. Later in the Food Court, Greedo is waiting around for his love to arrive when he is greeted by Jabba. Because he’s also waiting for someone special, Jabba invites Greedo to drink with him and he tells the Rodian that he is a new father these days due to the birth of his son Rotta. The Guild didn’t bother getting him a present, and the pressures are on him with the Separatists attacking hyperspace trade routes and other rogue elements cutting into his profits. Greedo brings up his own struggles with getting jobs and mentions how he wouldn’t have made it through if it wasn’t for Bennun. With the two both meeting their special someone in the Food Court, they drink to this, but Jabba is suddenly informed that Bennun Glau has left the planet with the Starburst Gem. He is told that she had help and spies have said a Rodian has always been hanging around her, so Jabba lashes out and exclaims that Greedo will never work on Tatooine again. Greedo tries to explain that he didn’t know and was duped too, but he can only run off and claim that he’ll make things right to which Jabba says he better or else it’ll be his head.
Returning to Jabba’s Palace, Greedo finds his ship gone and takes the nearest working ship he can find. Chasing Bennun into space, Bennun tells Greedo that she wants to break up as the Rodian demands that he get the Starburst Gem or else Jabba will kill him. Greedo tries to bluff and says that he’ll hunt her down, but she doesn’t believe this and offers her life for a tip. She will take Greedo to a rogue Wookiee plaguing Jabba in this quadrant, as being in the long-term with Jabba will do more than the gem can. A frustrated Greedo accepts to these terms and he is taken to the Wookiee ship before Bennun jumps to hyperspace. Boarding the Wookiee’s ship, Greedo takes the Wookiee aboard prisoner and delivers him to Jabba the Hutt.
Before Greedo can be killed, he tries to present the rogue Wookiee to Jabba, but Bib Fortuna informs them all that the rogue was captured a week prior. Greedo realizes that Bennun has betrayed him once again, but Bib Fortuna translates and tells Jabba that the Wookiee is Brewhada, a toymaker in the sector sourcing for new materials. Using this to his advantage, Greedo presents the Wookiee as a gift on the arrival of Rotta so that he has a custom toymaker. Jabba is touched by this gesture and so he removes the bounty on Greedo’s head, but the Rodian will be forever indebted to Jabba. Jabba then creates the terms for Brewhada, which is that the Wookiee will stay in his palace as a personal toymaker for Rotta and a cut of his profit will be shared with Jabba, but Brewhada will still be allowed to make designs for his factory on Kashyyyk. In the future, Greedo finishes telling this story to Rotta which finally puts the baby to sleep, and Brewhada continues to make toys which include a plush Wookiee doll.
Continuity[]
The inside cover of Hyperspace Stories 6 places the story during the Imperial Era,[2] however it actually takes place during the Republic Era.[3]
In the issue, it is revealed that Rotta was recently born. A doll with a bow is seen being made by Brewhada,[2] which means it is set before Hyperspace Stories 1 where the very same doll appears. The events Hyperspace Stories 1 occur before the Star Wars: The Clone Wars film, where Rotta is portrayed as visibly younger and smaller.[4]
