"Freedom!"
―DVD-4D4 releases the enslaved organics[3]

DV-4D4, or DVD-4D4, was a DV supervisor who worked in the control room in the spice mines of Kessel in 10 BBY. After L3-37 freed him and other droids, DV-4D4 freed every droid and slave in the mine.

Biography[]

DV-4D4,[4] also known as DVD-4D4,[2] was a DV supervisor droid[1] that was forced to work in the criminal Pyke Syndicate's spice mines on the planet Kessel. The supervisor droid worked in the mines' control room and was controlled by a restraining bolt.[3] In 10 BBY,[5] a group of disguised criminals working for the Crimson Dawn syndicate arrived at the mine with the aim of stealing coaxium from the Pykes. Believing that the criminals were there to trade in enslaved workers, mine director Quay Tolsite guided a group of them into the control room as DV-4D4 was walking past the door. The droid moved over to an open case by the room's wall as Tolsite began to negotiate with the criminals, but the Crimson Dawn affiliates soon attacked Tolsite and his guards, killing all of the Pyke personnel in the room.[3]

The criminal droid L3-37 then removed the restraining bolt from the enslaved droid DD-BD and told him to free the other droids. After the[3] assistant adminmech droid GB-BD[6] was freed, it in turn removed the restraining bolt from DV-4D4's chest.[3] As the freed droids became self-aware, they began to view L3-37 as something akin to a goddess and DD-BD her prophet.[2]

Attempting to emulate L3-37,[2] who was focused on guiding her ally Han Solo remotely through the mine tunnels and opening doors for him as he went,[3] DV-4D4 found a large red button on a control room console[2] and flipped a switch next to it before pressing the button and exclaiming "freedom." The button turned green and released the shackles of all the enslaved organic workers throughout the mine, who quickly rose up alongside the droids and began attacking the remaining Pykes. DV-4D4 then began ripping cabling from one of the central control room consoles as other droids tore wiring from the walls. The supervisor droid was still at one of the consoles when the criminals gave a rallying cry and then rushed from the control room to fight their way off world.[3]

Characteristics[]

DV-4D4 felt ambition rising within himself for the first time when he pressed the button to release the mine workers.[2] The droid had brown platting and three white sensors.[3]

Behind the scenes[]

DV-4D4 was portrayed by Juan Alonso[7] in the Anthology film, Solo: A Star Wars Story.[3]
