Synopsis[]
Act 1 (302)[]
The episode opens with a pan through Kamp Koral at night, where a mysterious, muscular figure addresses a letter to Patrick, and sends a clam to deliver it. In the morning, Patrick receives his letter, but does not know how to open it and asks SpongeBob for help. SpongeBob reveals that he got his own letter, and when they open theirs, they find old items of clothing from Kamp Koral: SpongeBob's neckerchief and Patrick's underwear. They decide to ask their friends if they also got letters, and visit Sandy, who shows that she got her old braces in her envelope. The three of them read SpongeBob's letter and learn that they are invited to a reunion at Kamp Koral, with a threatening message and no labeled sender.
Other recipients of the letters include Larry, Mo, Craig, Pearl, Tall Tail, Rea, Ro, Lady Upturn, and some anchovies. Mr. Krabs returns home and finds a nickel in his envelope, realizing the letter contains a map to the nickels he hid around camp. SpongeBob, Patrick, and Sandy have packed up and take a bus to Kamp Koral, driven by Mrs. Puff. SpongeBob reflects on his camp memories and asks who sent the invitations, and nobody on the bus did.
The bus arrives at Kamp Koral, which has fallen into serious disrepair. Seeing how unsafe the camp is, Mrs. Puff brings everyone back to the bus, only for its tires to pop and a tree to fall on it, and the bus explodes. Then, all the other possible escape methods explode as well, leaving everyone with no exit. Lady Upturn calls her own helicopter to escape, but the rest of the campers cling to it and cause it to crash.
In the forest, Mr. Krabs goes searching for his nickels, and the rest of the campers do not know where he went. Krabs finds the site of the treasure and digs up a chest. When he opens it, the mysterious figure snatches him inside. The others overhear his screaming and think he is just celebrating. Then, Nurse Helga arrives for the reunion. Seeing that Patrick has been impaled by a part of the helicopter, she chases him.
Act 2[]
SpongeBob sings a song about Kamp Koral to cheer up the group, but they are still unenthusiastic. Lady Upturn, Rea, Roh, and Regigilled head to their old cabin. Rea and Roh sit on a couch and are pulled in by the figure, and Upturn is pulled in by the figure coming out of the clock. Regigilled is then captured from behind a curtain.
Nurse Helga has fixed Patrick's stomach, leaving him hungry. She explores her cabin and finds that all of her medical tools have disappeared. A figure appears behind the curtain, and she opens it, only to find a coat. The figure then snatches her from inside the first aid box.
Harvey, Bubble Bass, and Kevin are by the zipline, where Harvey overhears Helga's scream and suspects something is creeping around camp. Bubble Bass notices there is no equipment on the zipline, so they improvise by using their pants. They fall into the lake, where Kevin has the tentacles on the top of his head ripped off and is pulled under the water.
Patrick searches around camp for food and finds Plankton's old canteen. Nearby, Plankton and Karen are dumping expired chum into the lake. Patrick, SpongeBob, and Sandy talk to him, and they learn he was not invited to the reunion. Sandy pressures him to make food for them, and Karen convinces him to go along with it so they do not report him for the illegal chum dumping.
Plankton serves the chum to everyone, Patrick being the only one who likes it. Larry invites the others to go and play volleyball. The anchovies devour their chum and spill some on Bubble Bass, who runs off to take a shower. Harvey, aware of how horror movies play out, warns Bubble Bass. He then worries that if he is left alone, he will be targeted, and runs away. The anchovies run to the outhouse, where all are captured by the figure. In the shower, Bubble Bass is ambushed by the figure.
The Dinghies and the Frigates are playing volleyball, with Pearl, Tall Tail, and Mrs. Puff watching. When the ball goes into the kelp, Mo goes to retrieve it, and she gets pulled into a bush by the figure. After another round with Tall Tail subbed in, the ball gets lost again, and Craig and Larry are pulled inside the bush when they go to get it. Harvey arrives and tells the group about the disappearances. As Sandy assures that there must be a reasonable explanation for them, Tall Tail is pulled into the bush. Pearl fears that she is next and starts crying.
Act 3 (303)[]
The survivors are sitting around a campfire at night, where Harvey explains the rules of horror: do not go off alone, say "I'll be right back," or canoodle. Plankton claims he is not scared, but gets pranked by Karen. They head into the woods for privacy. The others try to relax, and SpongeBob begins telling a horror story. Sandy suggests they stay the night in the Dinghy cabin, and Mrs. Puff leaves to retrieve Plankton and Karen. SpongeBob, Patrick, Sandy, Pearl, and Harvey arrive at the Dinghy cabin, which is now in bad condition.
Mrs. Puff finds Plankton and Karen, but they are pulled away while her back is turned. Mrs. Puff herself is then taken by the figure. Back in the Dinghy cabin, SpongeBob continues his story, and the group hear a terrible noise coming from inside a room. They ambush whoever is in there, and it is revealed to be Squidward playing his clarinet. Squidward explains he did not come for the reunion, but because he was banned from playing his clarinet in Bikini Bottom, and he had been there for a week. Patrick takes out a letter believing it is for Squidward, but it is actually for Old Man Walker, who did not attend camp. Squidward goes out into the woods, which Harvey warns against. He demonstrates what happens if one breaks the rules of horror, which leads to him getting captured.
Sandy leads SpongeBob, Patrick, and Pearl outside to find who the mysterious figure is. In the woods, Squidward has a run-in with some sea bunnies, then is captured by the figure. SpongeBob, Patrick, Sandy, and Pearl are looking for the missing campers; they then hear clarinet-playing and see a snail playing it. Patrick brings the clarinet with him. When Pearl suggests taking a break, the figure drags her beneath a cabin. Patrick is heard screaming, so SpongeBob and Sandy follow him to the Trawler cabin, and are captured in a spider web with him.
The Trawlers re-introduce themselves: Little Roxie and Big Roxie have switched places, and they are now all adults.
Act 4[]
When SpongeBob and Sandy explain their trouble, the Trawlers are actually intrigued by the idea of getting captured, willingly breaking the rules of horror, and as such the figure snatches them away.
At that point, Sandy gets an idea of who the figure is: Narlene and Nobby, who used to prank them all the time. Sandy brings them to Narlene's shack with a prank: Patrick plays the clarinet to wake them up, and SpongeBob and Sandy throw pies at them. Their prank ends with them being caught in a booby trap, and Narlene and Nobby wake up, then cut them free. Sandy accuses Narlene of pranking them, but she says they set the traps to catch the figure. Narlene and Nobby agree to team up with SpongeBob, Patrick, and Sandy to hunt down who has been capturing everyone. They each get suited up with their own weapons.
They head outside, where Patrick drops his sandwich weapon, goes to retrieve it, and is snatched away. Everyone else splits up: Nobby is caged when he finds some Sugar Squeeze, and Narlene is captured when she tries to escape into a tree stump. Sandy faces the figure and pulls out her electro-hammer, only for it to backfire. She then inflates her suit to escape, but the figure catches her and takes her to the Clamphitheater.
The figure finally reveals himself to be Elwood, who missed the last bus home from Kamp Koral and has lived there alone ever since. He got the idea to throw a reunion so everyone would come back to keep playing. Elwood puts Sandy in the Clamphitheater and goes to catch SpongeBob, the last one remaining. He is caught and dragged back, screaming. He sees his friends passed out and seemingly covered in blood, but they wake up and Sandy explains they had a ketchup fight while waiting for him. Elwood and Sandy tell SpongeBob what was going on, and the wise kraken shows up to start off the party.
The Trawlers play a cover of the Kamp Koral theme song as all the guests party and dance. SpongeBob, Patrick, and Sandy sing along. After the song is finished, Krabs asks Elwood where his treasure is, and Elwood says he spent all of it on the party, and the nickel he sent in the envelope was change. SpongeBob says that friends are the real treasure, and Krabs yells the word "no" as the scene pans out to the camp's entrance, where the remaining letters lose their stability and fall off.

Trivia[]
General[]
- This episode is dedicated to longtime series art director Peter Bennett, who passed away on May 17, 2024, 5 months before this episode would air. An "in loving memory" message for him appears at the end of the episode just before the closing credits. The dedication card to Peter Bennett at the end of this episode is not on any DVD releases.[8] This is due to the DVD releases using an older print of "Kreepaway Kamp" that was fully completed before Peter Bennett's passing and had no dedication to him at the end as a result.
- This is the seventh piece of SpongeBob SquarePants media to have a dedication to a crew member who passed away.
- Albeit only in the original airing and DVD releases, the first is "Karate Island," which is dedicated to Pat Morita, the voice of Master Udon in that episode.
- The second and third are "Super Evil Aquatic Villain Team Up is Go!" and The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water respectively, both of which has a dedication to Ernest Borgnine, the voice of Mermaid Man.
- The fourth is "Snooze You Lose"/"Krusty Katering," which has a dedication to Barry Anthony Trop, a music composer from season 4 to season 9.
- The fifth and sixth are "SpongeBob's Big Birthday Blowout" and The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run respectively, both of which has a dedication to the show's creator Stephen Hillenburg.
- This is the seventh piece of SpongeBob SquarePants media to have a dedication to a crew member who passed away.
- In international countries and VOD releases in the United States,[9] this episode is shown in two parts. There is an alternate "To Be Continued..." card that is used in those countries, and the episode's title card has alternate versions with "Part 1" and "Part 2" on them. The "To Be Continued..." card features the track "Hawaiian Solo Steel." The closing credits in this version is also changed to say "Cast of "Kreepaway Kamp Part 1"" and "Cast of "Kreepaway Kamp Part 2"."
- This also happens with "Atlantis SquarePantis" and "SpongeBob's Big Birthday Blowout."
- This episode was originally titled "Kreep Away Kamp."[3]
- The text on the title card uses the same designs as on the title card for "A Cabin in the Kelp."
- This episode aired on Todd White's 55th birthday.
- In the UK and Ireland, the lightning flashes before Sandy kicks down the Trawler cabin door are removed.[10]
- This special marks the first in the show for many things:
- This is the first 44-minute Halloween and holiday special overall.
- This is Kamp Koral's first physical appearance in the show. It also reveals the current condition of Kamp Koral in the SpongeBob timeline.
- This is the first main series episode written by Bobby Gaylor, having previously wrote for Kamp Koral: SpongeBob's Under Years.
- This marks the first time Regigilled and Craig Mammalton are shown in their normal outfits in the show. Regigilled also looks older compared to his appearance in "Blood is Thicker Than Grease."
- This marks the first appearance of Roh, Rea, Tall Tail, Harvey, Roxy, Preda Tory, and Jimmy Blobfish in the show. Roh and Rea have previously only appeared on a picture in "Upturn Girls."
- As of this episode, all of the original character campers in Kamp Koral have appeared in the main show.
- This is the first one-hour episode where Patchy the Pirate does not appear in any way.
- Gary is the only main character who doesn't appear in this episode physically, making this the first one-hour episode where not all of the main characters appear.
- This is the first episode since "As Seen on TV" where Mr. Doodles is portrayed to be Mr. Krabs' pet worm.
- Mikros Animation is involved in the episode when SpongeBob holds a picture of Kamp Koral in CGI-animation when he first arrives.
- This makes it the second SpongeBob SquarePants episode to have the involvement of Mikros Animation, following "PL-1413."
- In the promo, the scene in which SpongeBob laughs, Sandy says, "What'cha laughin' at?" and SpongeBob replies, "I'm just laughing because the woods are laughing!" uses a scene different than the actual episode; the audio in question is from the second part of the episode, while the footage used is from the third part of the episode. The first part of the scene in the promo is when SpongeBob says, "It's a fixer-upper" and Sandy replies, "More like a tearer-downer," and the second part is when SpongeBob says, "It must be Squidward!" As a result, SpongeBob and Sandy's lips don't match their dialogue and the second part's animation appears looped. Both instances are also cropped to be closer to the characters.
- This episode, alongside "Squidiot Box," "Blood is Thicker Than Grease," "PL-1413," "In the Mood to Feud," "Mooned!," "Hysterical History," "Snow Yellow and the Seven Jellies," and "Sandy's Country Christmas" serve as this season's 25th anniversary specials.
- Some of SpongeBob's screaming when he is running away from Elwood is reused from "Say Awww!"
- During the scene in which Elwood takes SpongeBob to the Clampitheater, several damaged vehicles can be seen. They are two buses, a Bikini Bottom News helicopter, and three boatmobiles. This explains how Perch Perkins and many other fish arrived at Kamp Koral to appear at the party in the Clampitheater.
- The credits list Kidferatu both as Kidferatu and Nosferatu; he is listed as Kidferatu under Dee Bradley Baker whereas he is listed as Nosferatu under Alexander Ward.
Episode references[]
- Roxy uses the "Blorg" keyboard from "The Ballad of Filthy Muck."
- Mo's possessed innertube from "Boo Light Special," Sandy's helmet from "Helter Shelter," and Patrick's shelter from "Squisery" all make cameos in the opening.
- The nudist colony fish from "In Search of Camp Noodist" makes a cameo at the party.
- Squidward being hit by a plank while leaving the Dinghy cabin is a reference to "Who's Complaining?"
- The stock art used in the key art that features Patrick with a steam whistle-shaped head is based off a pose from "Shanghaied."
Cultural references[]
- This episode's title is a parody of United Film Distribution Company's 1983 horror slasher film Sleepaway Camp.
- The title card is also based off a poster for the film.
- This episode is a parody of classic horror films overall, with Harvey even explaining how to survive said horror.
- As SpongeBob, Sandy, and Patrick take a big step into Mrs. Puff's bus, their poses are a nod to ones done in Robert Crumb's 1968 comic Keep On Truckin'.
- Bubble Bass taking a shower while the mysterious figure ambushes him is a reference to the 1960 Alfred Hitchcock film Psycho.
Errors[]
- When Squidward complains about how he has to go to a different place to play clarinet again, Pearl's lipstick is missing.
- In one scene, Kevin's teeth are missing.
- When Mrs. Puff says, "We are not staying here," SpongeBob is missing his shirt, tie, and belt, however his sleeves are still present.
- Throughout the initial Plankton interaction scene, SpongeBob has his normal tie on, rather than his Kamp Koral neckerchief.
