The Best Late-Night Food in San Francisco

Sleepy San Francisco still has great food past 10 p.m.

View as Map

There are cities in the United States known as temples to late-night dining, and San Francisco is not often one of the first names that springs to mind. But that’s just not right. The city’s embraced both drinking and dancing in its post-pandemic haze and if the Stud roaring once again is any good omen, we still have some good late-night options around. Whether for soy-marinated crab or 4 a.m. pork chops in the Castro, let these 16 restaurants satisfy all your cravings even after the lights go out elsewhere in town.

Kennedy's Indian Curry House & Irish Pub

In North Beach, and all of San Francisco, there’s just one multi-story bar and restaurant where you can enjoy pool, pints of Guinness, tandoori chicken, and syrupy sweet gulab jamun, plus a big outdoor patio for the extra raucous parties. The kitchen closes at midnight, but the bar stays open until 2 a.m.

Taishan Cuisine

This Chinatown restaurant specializes in food from China’s Guangdong province, which means braised lamb or beef stew, steamed vermicelli with shrimp, or wontons and fried fish balls, all served until 3 a.m. daily. Anthony Bourdain’s favorite burger shop, Sam’s, is also a storied late-night destination and located just a few blocks away, too.

Céleste

For the late-night wanderer in search of something slightly ritzy, newcomer Céleste holds it down on Union Street. Lalo Luevano and Paria Sedigh, owners of Bodega and Key Klub in North Beach and Lower Nob Hill, respectively, are dishing “Greek taverna fare” — think seafood and skewers — alongside a bevy of wine until 11 p.m.

Grubstake Diner

This classic San Francisco late-night diner has stood the test of time, continuing to serve three square meals a day in the Pork Gulch neighborhood. The menu is full of the usual fare — burgers, pancakes, and good old-fashioned American apple pie — but with a Portuguese flair in the form of dishes such as bife a Portuguesa and linguica sausage.

Cocobang

If late-night sizzling plates of corn cheese, warming bowls of army soup, and crisp fried chicken sound ideal after a late night, Cocobang in Union Square is your stop. The restaurant is open most nights until 2 a.m. and extends those hours to 4 a.m. on Friday and Saturday, with a steady stream of diners (and delivery folks) coming and going after 11 p.m.

Pinecrest Diner

Pinecrest is a longstanding diner just a block or so away from Union Square. It opened in 1969 and, against popular belief, is packed Wednesday through Sunday all through the night. The menu stars the usual suspects including burgers, sandwiches, salads, deep-fried dippables (as in mozzarella sticks, onion rings, and fries), and much, much more.

Muukata6395

It’s hard to pass up sizzling hot pot when the late-night turns into early morning, the witching hour approaching as one digs into marinated rib-eye and chicken. This new restaurant opened in March 2023 serving Thai barbecue on Geary Boulevard. Hit this spot up until midnight seven nights a week.

Dragon Horse

This SoMa destination for late-night skewers and sushi focuses on bar bites, including ginger chicken tsukune skewers, gyoza, and sushi options, in addition to the rose baiju-based Flaming Dragon and the rum-driven Mogura. Dragon Horse is open until 11 p.m. most days, then extends hours to 12:30 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.

Pizza Zone N Grill

Not only does Pizza Zone N Grill stay open until 3 a.m, but there’s also a menu of pizza and loaded fries such as the Pastrami riff and the chicken buffalo rendition. Plus, all of it is just across the street from Zeitgeist and a block from Martuni’s.

You can order one of the many outstanding cocktails at ABV until 2 a.m. every day, but if you want in on the menu of grilled abalone mushrooms or soft shell crab tacos, you’ll need to get that order in by midnight. There’s plenty to please — from meat and cheese platters to a fried chicken sandwich — but the star of the food side is the burger, which comes with white cheddar cheese, raw red onion, shredded lettuce, pickles, and a tangy special sauce.

Sushi Uma

The Outer Sunset — outside of late-night Korean restaurant Toyose — definitely leaves the pizza to get cold once 10 p.m. rolls around. But Sushi Uma is another exception, dishing up a wide menu of sushi, gyoza, and sake until 11:30 p.m. while playing wacky movies on two plasma screens.

Orphan Andy's Restaurant

This greasy spoon-esque treasure lies on the corner of Market and Castro streets and is undoubtedly amongst the top diners in the city. Things wrap up at 9:45 p.m. every night except Thursday through Saturday when the door stays open all 24 hours.

Despite its humble exterior (it is, after all, housed in a former garage), Toyose is one big party. The late-night Korean hideaway serves up hefty portions of Korean fried rice and saccharine soju cocktails, with last call at 1:30 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. During the week, the party ends at midnight.

Taqueria El Farolito

The witching hour for El Farolito is after midnight; the restaurant metes out burritos the size of bricks until 2:30 a.m. on Friday and Saturdays, making it a late-night pit stop for both the hungry and the inebriated. What it lacks in ambiance it makes up for with the sheer size of its offerings, which you can explore until 1:30 a.m. Sunday to Thursday. The North Beach outpost stays open late, too. Be aware that it’s cash only.

Emmy's Spaghetti Shack

Emmy’s Spaghetti Shack is a neighborhood favorite, and with the recent change in ownership, it’s renewed itself as a place for late-night food and drinks for locals. The restaurant closes at 9:30 p.m. on most days, but on Friday and Saturday, hours extend until midnight with a late-night food menu. Pair those late dishes with a “reverse happy hour” —meaning deals from 9:30 p.m. to midnight on Friday and Saturday — and it might become a new go-to spot for your group on the weekend.

The Korner Store Bites & Vibes

Ina Jungin Lee’s soju and soy-marinated crab haven is a scene, and K Pop fanatics flock here for the pork-topped tater tots and wasabi octopus. Lee’s securing permitting to stay open even later, but in the meantime, food flows until midnight.
