Bauska is a southern Latvian town, within 70 kilometers from Riga. Being a small destination to visit, Bauska doesn’t have a load of places to see, but there’s just enough to hold your attention for a whole day. Most tourists come here to have a look at Rundale Palace, built in baroque style in the 18th century. Another town’s highlight is Bauska Castle — a former hill fort located on a green hill between two converging rivers with a perfect scenic backdrop. This castle is the unique example of mannerism-era architecture and design in the Duchy of Courland and is definitely worth looking at.
There are many legends associated with this fortress. They say, for example, that the treasures of the local Duke are still hidden in the cellars, but you can’t get to them, as the ghosts of the deceased princess and her maids are wandering there, blowing out torches and candles. Another one is about eternal youth: if you drink water on the confluence of two rivers Musa and Memele near the Castle, and wash your face with it, the rejuvenating effect is guaranteed to you. Would you like to check it for yourself?
After having explored the Castle, follow the signs to get to the heart of the town with its quaint medieval buildings and narrow streets. Have a rest at one of the local restaurants serving national dishes at enormous size, and you’ll love this enjoyable town.
It's a very simple green salad, a mix of croutons, parmesan cheese and romaine lettuce. The dressing is so addictive. It's made with eggs, lemon juice, black pepper, Worcestershire sauce, anchovies, and mustard. This salad was introduced by Caesar Cardini, a restaurateur from the USA and Mexico.
This restaurant, located within a one-hour drive from Riga, is absolutely worth visiting! You will love its stylish, minimalistic and cozy interior in black colors with aureate accents, dark brown furniture and green plants. Every detail is well-thought and flawlessly designed, from the outer decor to ceramic plates and elegant cutlery. All of Aveņi’s chefs are just simple people with deep passion for cooking — that is what makes them successful in doing it! That’s why you’ll be astonished by the numerous variations of beef, chicken and pork steaks, Tagliatelli pasta, burgers, and soups. There’s a big section in the menu with vegetarian dishes, such as bulgur with smoked vegetables, wok with rice noodles and tofu, Caesar salad with NOchicken and many others.
Aveņi’s mission is to improve, grow, and serve even better quality food every year and their main value is to do all of it from the heart with care and love for the customers. By the way, Aveņi can boast the most loyal and regular client ever, who visits them almost every morning for the past 18 years. He always orders the same thing — a flat white coffee with exactly two salmon sandwiches. The staff has become so used to him that if there is a morning when they don't see him (that usually doesn't happen) it feels like the day is incomplete!
