Update on talks & tutorials, program committee, and registration!

Last week we wrapped up another great call for talks and tutorials , leading to a ton of excellent proposals for our Program Committee to work through in order to shape the PyCon 2015 schedule. I can already tell that it's going to be a great one; another one of those years where we could make several full conference schedules out of this body of proposals. Tutorials Tutorials saw a 40% increase in proposals, up to 99 submissions. This is the biggest jump I've seen, as tutorial proposal numbers have been relatively steady over the years, with small rises or falls here or there. This shouldn't come as a surprise given the growth of Python's use in education, both institutionally and otherwise. We've always gotten a bunch of full-time educators interested in sharing their knowledge with the Python community, and we're getting more. The majority of instructors, however, come from outside of academia, with everything from book authors to project creators being ...

Registration is Now Open!

The PyCon 2014 organizers are thrilled to announce the opening of registration for the April 9-17 conference, taking place at the Palais des congrès de Montréal in Montréal, Quebec, Canada. This event represents the first of two annual PyCons to take place in Montréal, following a hugely successful two-year run in Santa Clara, California. As with years past, ticket prices remain unchanged, and value is ever increasing. At the close of talk and tutorial proposals last week, a record 565 talks were submitted -- over 100 more than for PyCon 2013. Reviewers have been hard at work to begin shaping the 2014 schedule, which is expected in December. Quantity-based early bird rates are back for 2014, with the cap set at the first 800 tickets receiving the discounted rates. Total sales are initially being kept to 2,000 tickets. For an individual buyer, the regular $350 USD rate is cut 15% for during the early bird period to $300 USD. The $600 USD corporate rate is dropped to $450 USD during...

Registration Count Approaches 1200, Financial Aid Closing Soon

As of this morning, the registration count is a just short of 1200, putting us very close to halfway sold out. However, if you want to go to PyCon, don’t plan on waiting too long. We typically see two surges in ticket sales: right after the holidays, and right after the schedule is announced. Guess what’s happening soon? The holidays and the schedule announcement. Register today! The list of selected talks was announced a few weeks ago, so check it out. We’ve got talks by the perennial favorites Alex Martelli and Raymond Hettinger and many newcomers. The list features a diverse list of topics and presenters, with many familiar faces and many breaking onto the scene. The selections came from over 450 proposals, and given the excellent quality of proposals we received, we could have made two or three entire conferences out of the submissions. It’s really going to be a great three days of talks. The tutorials are already scheduled and can be added to any existing registrations by lo...

Early Bird Rates Ending Soon, Save up to 25% Today!

On the heels of the long awaited list of accepted talks for PyCon 2013 comes news that early bird registration is nearly sold out. For 2013 a new approach was taken, shifting from a time-based early bird window to a ticket-based one, where the first 1000 tickets sold receive discounted rates. Registration information can be found at https://us.pycon.org/2013/registration/ . There are about 100 early bird tickets left That’s right, we just hit our 900th registered attendee for PyCon 2013, so after the next 100 tickets are sold, the regular rates will apply. Sales then continue up to our cap of 2500 attendees. If your employer is paying for your tickets, they can receive a 25% discount if they make the purchase soon. After the early bird rate ends, the $450 discounted ticket price goes up to $600, which is the same rate PyCon has kept going back several years. If you’re paying for yourself, save $50 by buying one of the remaining early bird tickets. The regular rate takes a slight incr...

Early bird tickets halfway sold out. Get yours today!

We’re about halfway sold out of early bird tickets for PyCon 2013 with 463 signed up, so hurry up and register before the rates increase! With discounts up to 25%, purchasing early makes this already affordable conference an even better value. Only the first 1000 of 2500 total tickets will receive the early bird discount, so act fast. The corporate rate for PyCon 2013 remains the same as it has been for years, coming in at $450 USD if you buy early. The regular rate goes up to $600, which is still a steal when it comes to conference tickets. Companies have long been sending their employees to PyCon, and 2013 will be no different. With the conference back in Silicon Valley for another year and all 2500 tickets sure to sell out, the networking potential for attendees is incredible. The maintainers of most major open source projects will be there, and the conference environment is a great place to find out what everyone else is doing. Even outside of the talks and tutorials, PyCon is an...

Financial Aid Applications Due Tomorrow!

If finances are what's keeping you away from PyCon, the Financial Aid Committee is there to help make it possible. The deadline for applications is tomorrow - January 7, 2012 - so hurry up and get your application filled out. It's a very quick process thanks to their online application . Filling out the application requires that you know a few things up front, but will take you no more than a few minutes to complete. I just did a test run right now and it took me three minutes to click through and enter a few pieces of information. What you need to know: Do you need assistance with conference registration? This covers your ticket into the show. If you say no here, you will need to buy your own ticket. If you say yes here, don't go off and buy your own ticket to then be reimbursed for. If your application is accepted your ticket will be handled by the committee. Do you need assistance with a hotel room? If yes, how many nights do you plan to stay? Keep tutorials an...
