Smoothie cafe chain Moberi continues its rapid expansion across town, this time returning to Southeast Portland. Moberi is moving into the former Rachel’s Ginger Beer location on SE Hawthorne, years since the former cart closed at Tidbit pod.
Moberi has developed a rabid following for its smoothies and acai bowls, which use organic Tambor acai and add-ins like dragonfruit and peanut butter. The cafe, which started as a set of carts with bike-pedal-blended smoothies, has grown to offer more smoothie bowls, matcha, oatmeal, and soft serve, specializing in “approachable” healthy food that’s “not just for uber-vegans,” in the words of Moberi owner Ryan Carpenter.
Moberi’s new cafe, opening in March, will introduce a new style of soft serve, with optional superfood mix-ins and toppings. The cafe currently serves two flavors of soft serve: vanilla mint and chocolate maca. At the new store, the soft serve will be mixed to-order, so guests can customize and design their own healthy-adjacent, dairy-free swirl.
Rachel’s Ginger Beer and Boke Dokie closed at the end of 2018, opening up the corner storefront at the beginning of the year. Carpenter has wanted to open in Southeast since the cart closed, so when he saw the space had opened up, he jumped at the opportunity. Once it opens, Moberi will seat 20 inside the cafe, with the brand’s classic phone-charging bike and maple paneling — sidewalk seating will also be available for warm-weather smoothies. Stay tuned for updates as the cafe approaches its opening date.
