In 2006, Anne and Mike Miller opened what they today bill as Portland’s first dedicated gluten free bakery, Gluten Free Gem (originally named CCP Gluten Free Baking), but for years, they focused on wholesale. Now Gluten Free Gem has a retail location at 140 NE Broadway St., so the public can try its doughnuts, cookies, and cakes, whether for eating-in or grab-and-go.

The Millers launched Gluten Free Gem bakery when their daughter was diagnosed with celiac disease, so they take gluten cross-contamination seriously, as evinced by the bakery’s GFCO certification. "With this retail shop we’re excited to offer a new variety of pastries that we haven’t been able to do wholesale," Anne Miller writes in the press release. New items include soft pretzels, cinnamon rolls, and seasonal specials.

Along with its all-gluten-free baked goods, the retail location serves Water Avenue Coffee, Jasmine Pearl Tea, and other drinks. Gluten Free Gem is now open Wednesday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
