Her new Lexus ES350 surged out of control on an interstate highway in October 2006, reaching speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour. She applied the brakes and changed into every available gear, including neutral and reverse, to no effect.
âI figured I was going to have to put the car into the oncoming guardrail to avoid hitting anybody else. I prayed for God to help me ⦠I called my husband on the Bluetooth. I knew he could not help me, but I wanted to hear his voice one more time,â she said, holding back tears.
Six miles on she was eventually able to bring the car to a stop with both feet on the brake pedal.
Eddie Smith, her husband, said that when they reported to Toyota and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), their concerns that an electronic fault may have caused the incident, they were dismissed as liars.
âShame on you Toyota for being so greedy. Same on NHTSA for not doing your job,â Mrs Smith said.

Toyota has stated that media coverage of an accident in California in August that wiped out a Highway Patrol man and three members of his family, generated many of the 2,600 consumer complaints about SUA incidents reported between 2000 and 2009. But committee research suggests 1,825 complaints were made before this crash and that there was ample evidence available to both the company and to regulators of problems related to SUA incidents in Toyota vehicles before the autumn of 2008.
