Monday is one of the best nights of the week for dining out. The chaotic Thursday-through-Sunday crowds have died down and grabbing a walk-in seat at popular restaurants is usually easier to swing, even at peak dining times. While many restaurants tend to be closed Mondays, plenty of businesses keep their doors open for their peers in the hospitality industry, who might have the day off, and regulars in the neighborhood looking for a bite to eat. Here are some of our favorite places to eat on a Monday right now.

Hoexters
This Upper East Side revival comes from Alexandra Shapiro who has reopened the restaurant her father originally helped open in the 1970s. Look for dishes like gorgonzola garlic bread, chopped salad, a smash burger, and splurges like caviar and potato chips. The room is retro with details like a black-and-white penny tile floor and tartan wallpaper, with pine, burgundy, and midnight accents.

Sky Pavilion NYC 川云涧
The restaurant is helmed by chef Zhong Qing Wang, who got his start in cooking school in Sichuan’s capital, under several Sichuan master chefs. Wang opened his first Manhattan restaurant, La Vie en Szechuan, around 2008, later earned rave reviews from the New York Times, and closed during the pandemic. At this new spot, prepare to be wowed over dishes like century eggs with fresh green chiles or a green peppercorn fish stew.

Ci Siamo
Chef Hillary Sterling, a James Beard nominee, has turned this restaurant opposite Hudson Yards into a destination. The star feature is the wood-burning oven, which makes everything from bread to proteins like a whole trout and 45-ounce porterhouse. Don’t miss the buffalo butter tagliatelle, either.

SEA
Located a stone’s throw from Penn Station, Sea comes from Jungsik Yim, the Korean chef with Michelin-starred credentials who has followed up his namesake restaurant with a more casual sibling, serving Southeast Asian dishes with fine-dining flair. Go here for Thai sausages, lacy prawn rolls, and pork noodle soup, though there are zero misses on this menu.

Red Sorghum
Red Sorghum from Vincent Lin — behind Midtown’s Hunan-focused Blue Willow— feels like a movie set with its 1930s backdrop. Located in a stretch of Jackson Avenue thronged with new high-rises and boasting a giant dining room and bar, the menu here focuses on traditional Sichuan and Hunan, while the cocktail bar features mixed drinks made with baijiu.

Zaab Zaab
The original location for what’s becoming a mini-empire, Zaab Zaab offers compelling Thai cuisine from chef Kannika Moi Kittipinyovath: Don’t miss dishes like larb ped udon that boasts not only minced duck, but also tidbits of skin and liver, making the dish multi-textured and delightfully rich and spicy, spiked with a healthy dose of chiles. There’s also a papaya salad with pickled black crab, which adds crunch and a funky flavor.

Chama Mama
Georgian stalwart Chama Mama can get slammed on the weekends, but Monday diners are rewarded with shorter wait times and faster access to tangy pickled vegetables, plates of hefty, broth-filled khinkali, and the fan-favorite blistered cheese vessels known as adjaruli khachapuri.

The Noortwyck
Excellent neighborhood restaurant the Noortwyck from chef Andy Quinn and sommelier Cedric Nicaise — who met while working at Eleven Madison Park — features a standout wine list and a bistro menu for a range of appetites. Consider the Parker House rolls and the crudo as well as a lively chicory salad with stracciatella and pomelo. In a nice surprise the entrees might outshine the starters from the Duroc pork chop to the bucatini with crab and ‘nduja. There’s also the roast chicken for two with classic tarragon in an Albufera sauce.

Zimmi's
Maxime Pradié cooks family renditions of rustic Provençal-leaning fare. Start with an excellent citrus salad, artichoke soup with foie gras, or pate, then move on to entrees like lamb stew or pork collar or a bowl of pasta with pesto and beans. It’s a tough seat to score, but you might have better luck Mondays than the rest of the week. Take note it’s tight quarters and can get loud.

Claud
One of the city’s more ambitious French wine bars right now is Claud. Hidden downstairs in a commercial strip on 10th Street in the East Village, the food is so good it nearly overshadows the wine. Glasses of wine, half of them French, are in the $13 to $32 range and change periodically, boasting a cellar of up to 1000 bottles. Look for dishes like salt cod croquettes, tilefish with razor clams, and the famous devil’s food cake for two.

Lord’s
One of Eater’s best new restaurants in America in 2023 is open on Mondays. Lord’s, from Dame’s Patricia Howard and Ed Szymanski is the owners’ second restaurant of three. It’s serving the type of food that coursed its way through New York’s gastronomic zeitgeist more than a decade years ago that’s seeing a revival: hay-smoked trout, pig head terrine, monkfish, and sweetbreads.

Superiority Burger
Restaurant workers with Mondays off can hit up Superiority Burger, known for its meatless sandwiches made with collard greens, tofu skin, and more. The restaurant has a front dining room and more seats at a counter in the back. If there’s a wait: Head to the back bar, where you can order beers and shots, or eat homemade salty snacks dispensed from an old-school gumball machine. You can now eat at the back bar, too.

Ayat
Ayat has multiple locations: Each of them faithfully performs the duties of a Monday night restaurant. The vibe is lively, the portions are large and reasonably priced, and most important, there are tables available tonight. There’s no alcohol on the menu, but there’s lots of tea and the restaurant is BYOB.

Mắm
Mam is home to some of the city’s “most exciting Vietnamese food” which includes flavorful pho and fried chicken tendon that you’ll eat in a decidedly low-frills dining room. Don’t be dissuaded by the website, which allows patrons to order in advance: It’s possible to walk in here without a reservation and order in person.

Taiwan Pork Chop House
Most fans of Taiwan Pork Chop House seem to sit down for one of the two specialties of the house, offered with abundant quantities of rice and pickled mustard greens: The epic, thin-cut pork chops with a sweet glaze, or the oversized chicken leg, briny and delicious. Both are equally good.

Place des Fêtes
This French-sounding bar specializes in Spanish wines and seafood in a cozy subterranean Clinton Hill dining room from the owners of the Michelin-starred restaurant Oxalis (closed for the moment). Look for small plates from sardine toasts to fancy ham or a Castelfranco salad with hazelnuts. Wines by the glass start at around $15 to $17.
