The Lower Garden District got a vegan soul food restaurant last Friday.
Bonnets Nola, at 1910 Magazine Street, serves vegan and non-vegan Caribbean options like tacos, “soul bowls,” (collards, rice and beans, protein), crawfish mac and cheese, jerk rolls, and festive-looking cocktails. It takes over a space on Magazine Street that’s seen a hookah cafe and creole spot, Roux Public House, in recent years.
The restaurant joins other recent Magazine Street additions Warbucks, from John Besh’s Restaurant Group, and Gris-Gris a few doors down. It also helps round out the city’s surprisingly few Caribbean offerings, following up the 2016 openings of 14 Parishes in Mid-City and the upscale Creole/Caribbean Compère Lapin.
Bonnets Nola will be open seven days a week for lunch and dinner, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays and until 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Eater has reached out to owner Myesha Brown for any further details.
