This week, Times-Pic critic Brett Anderson reports that Pagoda Cafe (at Bayou Road and Kerlerec) also ranks among his favorite new breakfast options in town. A few weeks ago, Anderson delved into the wonderful world of new breakfast spots in New Orleans, noting District, Biscuits and Buns on Banks, and more, but apparently somebody called him a "hater" for leaving Pagoda Cafe off the list. Turns out he'd only had lunch at this funky little Seventh Ward gem, but now he's been back for both breakfast AND brunch on the patio (there's only outdoor seating available, btw).
Anderson notes that owners Shana Sassoon and Dan Etheridge are filling "a dire local need" with their breakfast tacos. The pastries here are also stealing the show, with flaky, buttery sausage rolls and more savory offerings (available with side salads as a meal) as well as scones and such available all day. And there's this:
The kitchen's creativity rewards return visits. My last Pagoda meal began with house-smoked redfish on grilled Bellegarde bread with capers and pickled onions. The meal before that brought a (seriously) delicious vegetarian banh mi of beets, pickled vegetables and an Indian-style chutney.
Head over to Pagoda Cafe's official website to check out the full daily menu and Sunday brunch offerings.
