Last night was the final night of J'Anita's, purveyors of super-good bar food inside the Rendon Inn in Broadmoor and Grit's Bar uptown. Owner Craig Giesecke posted the news to his personal blog last night. Here's what he had to say:
After five years, I'm simply tired. In a perfect world, I'd hit on tomorrow's Lotto ticket and take TBK on a month-long trip to several places so we could see people and things we've been putting off for far too long. We can't do that, of course (we were lucky to pay the power bill today), since I've gotta gin up some income pretty quick.Ian McNulty at the Gambit confirmed this, getting the word from Giesecke that it was "a combination of financial issues and staffing problems for the late-night kitchen [that] forced his hand."
J'Anita's opened as a brick-and-mortar restaurant in 2007, moving into the Avenue Pub where Craig and his wife Kimmie became known for their way-above-average bar food. At the end of the 2010, they had outgrown the small kitchen at the Avenue Pub and moved to the Rendon Inn, but as Giesecke wrote in his blog, it sounds like they were having trouble getting people to come in to that location: "you could park the MetLife blimp over it 24/7 and still have trouble drawing a consistent crowd that far off the beaten path."
According to Giesecke, this time is for good, meaning he closed it for real, not that they "shut down to move it (again)." We'll see.
