Super Mario RPG is a Nintendo Switch role-playing game published by Nintendo in 2023. It is a remake of the 1996 Super Nintendo Entertainment System title Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, originally developed by Square. The game was first announced in the June 21, 2023 Nintendo Direct and was released on November 17. Upon release, it was revealed that ArtePiazza was the primary developer of the game.

Gameplay[]

Maintaining the gameplay of the original, this game uses new button inputs for the Switch. Players can now attack all enemies at once, just slightly less than the targeted enemy. There's also a new percentage meter which allows for a special "Triple Move" attack once filled, causing massive damage depending on the party. When this happens, an animated cutscene plays. Chain displays also appear when attacking and dodging, along with a list of stats.

Once the game is completed, players can now replay bosses; however, their difficulty greatly increases in doing so.

Development[]

With the game's preload, people discovered that ArtePiazza was the primary developer, with the game being made in the Unity engine.[3][4] All the game's cutscenes and special attacks were animated by Digital Media Lab. Nintendo Pictures helped with character design and animation.

Reception[]

The game received a generally favorable reception from critics, praising the game's new features, graphics, soundtrack, and faithfulness; though, some criticized its simple difficulty and story.[6][7][8][9]

The game has a score of "83" on Metacritic, based on 73 reviews.[10]

Sales[]

According to the February 2024 financial report release by Nintendo, the game has sold 3.14 million copies within three months.[2]

  • The game's box art is inspired by the original game's Japanese box art.
