Space Harrier is a shoot'em up game created by Sega in 1985 for arcades. It was ported by Takara to the Famicom in 1989. The game was re-released on the Wii Virtual Console. The game also has a 3DS version as a 3D Classic and Nintendo Switch version as a part of Sega AGES which both have upgrades over the original release.

Gameplay[]

The game involves Harrier flying through space with his jet gun as he kills enemies and destroys stuff. He is the last of the Dragon Land's Sentinels and fights against robots, dragons, rock monsters, and many other creatures. At two points during his journey, a cat dragon called Uriah will crash into lots of obstacles to earn him bonus points. At the end of each stage is a boss. Kill the boss to progress to the next stage. Your jet gun can destroy most obstacles but some of them are indestructible. The bosses can only be damaged in their weak spots. You have a limited amount of lives in this game. If you get hit by anything, you will die and lose one of your lives. You can insert coins to gain more lives. If you lose all of them, the game will ask if you want to continue (which requires coins to be inserted). You have a limited amount of continues though. If you run out of continues, the game will end. If a player gets a high score after completing all 18 stages or just in general after getting a game over, you will be taken to the high score screen to enter your name.
