The Master Sword(JP) is a recurring weapon in the Legend of Zelda series, making its first appearance in The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. It is Link's signature weapon, being used by him in most incarnations. The Master Sword was forged by order of the gods in order to keep evil from corrupting the Triforce, its power being one of the few things that can resist even powers granted by the Triforce, as such, it is one of the few weapons capable of harming recurring series villain Ganon(dorf). This weapon repels evil magic and dispels dark barriers earning it the title The Blade of Evil's Bane.

The Master Sword can only be used by one who is "pure of heart" and "strong of body" and in most of its appearances, Link has to prove himself worthy before he is able to wield it; often by collecting three artifacts related to the virtues of Power, Courage and Wisdom.

It was revealed in The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword that the sword used to be known as the Goddess Sword and was forged by the Goddess Hylia with the hope that her future hero would forge it into the Master Sword and use it to defeat Demise, which explains why it is effective against Ganon, who is born of Demise's influence. In this game, the sword also gained a consciousness named Fi who went to sleep after Demise's defeat but still sometimes manifests as a "voice" in the Master Sword, even by the time of Breath of the Wild.

History[]

Super Smash Bros.[]

In the Super Smash Bros. series, the Master Sword is wielded by four different characters, including all of the adult Links (Hero of Time, Hero of Twilight and Hero of the Wild) as well as Toon Link. As their primary weapon, it is used in many of their physical attacks, utilizing moves like the stab from The Legend of Zelda, Up Thrust and Down Thrust from The Adventure of Link, Spin Attack from A Link to the Past, and Jump Slash from Ocarina of Time. The Hero of Twilight incarnation of Link retains his iconic sword twirl and flourish as an idle and taunt respectively.

Mario series[]

Mario Kart 8[]

In Mario Kart 8 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, the Master Sword can be seen resting in a pedestal at a crossroad inside Hyrule Castle in the Hyrule Circuit. It acts as a Spin Boost Pillar, but is initially inaccessible. On the track leading to the sword, there are three spin boost crystals that, when activated, cause the sword to rise up from the pedestal along with a Dash Panel ramp that allows racers to go through it and receive a spin boost. Link also pulls out the Master Sword during some of his tricks.

Super Mario Maker 2[]

The Master Sword was introduced as a regular power-up in the 2.0 update of Super Mario Maker 2. It only appears in the Super Mario Bros. style and has the main effect to turn Mario, Luigi, Blue Toad or Toadette into Link. In this form they can uses Link's Bombs to blow up obstacles, the sword itself to attack enemies, the Bow to throw projectiles with precision, a down thrust, a shield, and a dash attack.
