Richard Foronjy, an actor best-known for his roles playing cops in films including Serpico and The Morning After, has died aged 86.
The celebrated actor is said to have served more than eight years in prison before pursuing an acting career, and spoke about how his real-life experience informed his performances as fictional police officers.
An obituary shared online by the McHoul Funeral Home in New York read: ‘Richard Foronjy, an actor of unparalleled talent and versatility, has bid farewell to the stage and screen, leaving behind a legacy that will always be a part of cinematic history.’
The tribute to him described how the late actor ‘captivated audiences with his commanding presence and innate charisma’, as well as engaging readers with his book From the Mob to the Movies, which was a ‘testament to his lifelong pursuit of creativity, expression, and staying off the streets’.
The message described Foronjy as a ‘legend in every sense’, stating: ‘He has left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him. With a spirit as vibrant as the sun, he embraced life with unparalleled vigor and enthusiasm.
‘Richard’s outgoing nature and infectious joy illuminated every room he entered, leaving a lasting impression on all who crossed his path. Richard Foronjy’s legacy of living life to the fullest will continue to inspire generations to come.’
Born in Brooklyn in August 1937, one of Foronjy’s biggest early roles came in 1973 when he played Corsaro in Al Pacino’s Serpico.
In 2021, the late actor shared a series of black and white headshots on his Facebook page, explaining to his followers that they ‘landed his first role in Serpico’.
‘I’ll always be grateful to Sidney Lumet!’ he added, referencing the Oscar-nominated director who helmed the film.
He went on to appear in movies including The Gambler, Repo Man, Once Upon A Time in America, City Heat, Ghostbusters II, Midnight Run and Fatal Instinct.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, in 1987 he gave an interview with UPI’s Vernon Scott where he spoke about being arrested more than 20 times for ‘forgery, bank robbery, credit card rip-offs, assorted crimes and skullduggery’.
He reportedly once said of the character roles he became known for playing police officers: ‘I was especially good at playing cops, no doubt because I got to know them so well when they were busting me every other week.’
In the obituary written for Foronjy, it detailed how his ‘journey as a father was marked by challenges and complexities’.
‘Richard’s life serves as a reminder that we are all imperfect beings, striving to navigate the intricate depths of relationships and for some parenthood. May his spirit find peace, and may his loved ones find solace in the memories of his vibrant essence.’
Foronjy is survived by his two sons and two daughters, 17 grandchildren adn great-grandchildren, in addition to his three brothers.
‘He spent his last days with his love Wendy Odell Chiaro and her family who showered him with love and adventures,’ the tribute read.
‘He passed peacefully with his granddaughter Katherine Foronjy Coburn, his love Wendy, and her daughter Lori.
‘Though his physical presence may have departed, Richard Foronjy’s spirit will live on through the countless lives he touched and the timeless performances that will continue to inspire generations to come.’

Another user called @goofydoofyalt added: ‘Even as a small character in Ghostbusters 2 I still remember his lines. I hope he is resting in peace and my condolences go to the family. Rest in Peace Richard Foronjy.’
