Green Book has been named the best picture at the 2019 Academy Awards as Olivia Colman and Rami Malek took home the best actor trophies.
Bohemian Rhapsody was the big winner of the night taking home four awards, while Black Panther and Green Book took home three awards each.
The Queen biopic scooped best actor for its lead star Rami Malek, who portrayed late frontman Freddie Mercury, as well as wins for film editing, sound editing and sound mixing.
The win for the Peter Farrelly-directed movie Green Book came as a surprise to some but during an awards season with no clear frontrunner, the film had always been considered in with a chance despite its surrounding controversy.
‘This story, when I heard it, it gave me hope and I wanted to share that hope with you because we’re still living in divided times, maybe more so [now] than ever,’ said director Peter Farrelly.
‘All we have to do, all we have to do is talk and to not judge people by their differences but look for what we have in common. And we have a lot in common. We all want the same thing, we want love and happiness. We want to be treated equally, and that’s not such a bad thing.’
Olivia’s win for best actress was the biggest shock of the night though – in a ceremony that flowed smoothly despite weeks of conflict between members and the Academy board.
Olivia picked up the gong after industry insiders saw her slipping in the pack as Glenn Close became the firm favourite.
Sorry, this video isn't available any more.
It wasn’t to be for Glenn on the big night though, with Olivia’s face telling the entire picture as her name was read out.
As she took to the stage, visibly emotional, she said: ‘It’s genuinely quite stressful. This is hilarious. I’ve got an Oscar! If I forget anybody, I’ll find you later and give you a massive snog but I’m sorry…’
Black Panther’s awards were all technical awards but saw Oscars history made as Hannah Beachler and Ruth E. Carter became the first African American women to win best production design and best costume design at the Academy Awards for the film.
They also became only the second and third women in the history of the awards to win in a below-the-line category – and the awards were the first for Marvel.
‘Below-the-line’ refers to the separation of the crew for production costs; actor, directors and story writers are considered above-the-line while the rest of the team are below-the-line.
Bests supporting actor and actress went to Green Book’s Mahershala Ali and If Beale Street Could Talk star Regina King respectively, while Alfonso Cuaron took home Best Director for Roma.
Green Book’s third win came with best original screenplay, while the best adapted screenplay honour went to Spike Lee for BlacKkKlansman.
The ceremony was without a host but the evening kicked off with a performance from Adam Lambert and Queen and also included music from Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper, Bette Midler, and Jennifer Hudson.
Presenters on the night included Julia Roberts, Daniel Craig, Gary Oldman, Allison Janney, Sam Rockwell, Frances McDormand, Jennifer Lopez and Chris Evans
The 2019 Oscars had risked becoming a shambles as Kevin Hart stepped down as host after old homophobic tweets were discovered, and the Academy decided not to replace him.
It was the first ceremony in 30 years without a host.
In a bid to keep the ceremony under three hours, the Academy also revealed that there would not be live performances of the nominated original songs, and that four categories would not be presented live on air.
Both decisions were later rescinded after major uproar.
But despite fears that the show would be a disaster, it went off without a hitch – and came in at just over three hours.
