- "Right then, I would've killed anything that got in my way. You know what that means, right? Now I'm the monster. Yeah. If any of those pieces of shit that I killed, if they deserved to die... so do I."
- ―Frank Castle to Karen Page
The Abyss is the eleventh episode of the second season of the television series The Punisher.
Synopsis[]
Amy rushes to protect Frank, who lies defenseless in a hospital. Pilgrim gets some crushing news, and Karen Page calls in a favor.
Plot[]
Arrested by the New York City Police Department, heavily wounded Frank Castle is brought to the Sacred Saints Hospital, while he reminisces over innocent women that died in the crossfire because of him. Amy Bendix rushes to the hospital to find Castle, while Curtis Hoyle is in the distress over taking a man's life during the shootout, blaming Castle for the mess they got themselves into.
Karen Page visits Castle at the hospital, presenting herself as his lawyer from Nelson, Murdock & Page to get through the police. Page thinks how to help Castle in his situation, but he refuses her help, believing that he deserves punishment for killing innocent civilians. Meanwhile, Dinah Madani approaches Brett Mahoney during the police investigation at the Valhalla. Mahoney informs Madani that Castle's attempt to take Billy Russo down resulted in civilians' deaths but Madani doubts the validity of his claims. Madani asks Mahoney to let her speak with Castle, promising to give Russo to NYPD if he speaks about it, and Mahoney agrees.
Bendix sneaks into Castle's room, pretending to be a nurse in an attempt to get Castle out of the custody before bounty hunters could get to him, before Madani also enters the room. Suddenly, Madani is contacted by Russo who mocks Castle over what he had put his former friend through by making him a murderer.
After he hangs up, Krista Dumont tells Russo that he needs to get out from New York City, since he is still wanted by NYPD. Later, Dumont tells Russo about KM, her father and a Vietnam veteran who committed suicide and attempted to take his daughter with him, although she survived.
Eliza Schultz visits John Pilgrim and informs him that his wife had passed away, which emotionally breaks him. Schultz tells Pilgrim that he needs to focus on his mission to eliminate Castle and Bendix, since they are a still a threat for the Schultz family.
Madani refuses to believe that Castle was a murderer NYPD claims he is, so together with Page, they ask Ed Zatner for help. In exchange for a favor, Zatner allows Madani and Page to examine the bodies of women supposedly killed by Castle. Upon the examination, Madani concludes that they were killed by Russo beforehand and used to break Castle by convincing him that he was the one who killed them. However, O'Rourke, a former Kitchen Irish member who joined NYPD attempts to assassinate Castle and collect a bounty and attacks Bendix when she tries to stop him. Madani rescues Bendix by knocking O'Rourke out and informs Castle that he did not kill those women and Russo was the one who set him up.
Castle decides to escape from the custody, so Page activates a fire alarm, right before Pilgrim enters the hospital to kill Castle, only to find his room empty. Madani tries to get Castle out of the hospital, only to be confronted by Mahoney outside who arrests Castle, driving him in the ambulance to the precinct.
