Biography[]
S.H.I.E.L.D. S.T.A.T.I.O.N.[]
Mark Smith worked constantly in field assignments for three years, hoping to be assigned to work in the Helicarrier. He took a day off from assignments when Maria Hill chose to give him a random psychological assessment. Smith was deemed "unfit for assignment" and transferred to S.H.I.E.L.D. S.T.A.T.I.O.N. Smith became a research and development technician in the S.T.A.T.I.O.N. working with Nicholas Cooper on how the Tesseract reacted with the Scepter based on videos they had from the Battle of New York.
Cooper was enthusiastic about the project; Smith could not decipher the patterns and readings that Cooper noticed. When Cooper asked Smith why he was doing R&D instead of field assignments, Smith told him the story of Maria Hill's assessment and how he felt disdain for the S.H.I.E.L.D. commander.[1]
New Loyalty[]
The conversation that Smith had with Nicholas Cooper was overheard by a guard loyal to HYDRA. In his gym bag, Smith found a note telling him to come to a hangar. There the guard introduced him to Baron Strucker who offered Smith to join HYDRA, but first, Smith had to prove his loyalty. Smith killed Cooper and together with Mark Basso, he took the Scepter to Sokovia so that List could work on reactivating the Chitauri Guns for HYDRA.[1]
