A native of Macon, Georgia, Gabe Jones studied German and French[1] at Howard University[3] before joining the United States Army. Jones would eventually join the 92nd Infantry, a unit he described as "All black, all proud."[4] In 1943, while fighting alongside Bucky Barnes and Dum Dum Dugan, Jones was captured by HYDRA and placed in a cell with other allied prisoners where he was forced to build powerful weapons for his enemy.[1]

When Captain America single-handedly assaulted the facility in which he was a prisoner, Jones, along with his companions, broke free and wreaked havoc on the HYDRA soldiers and the base by controlling a tank with Dum Dum Dugan. Because Jones spoke fluent German, he could show Dugan how to control the tank while James Montgomery Falsworth fired the cannon. Jones joined the rest of the rescued unit and returned to a US military base immediately after.[1]
"You were right, Doctor Zola's on the train. HYDRA dispatcher gave him permission to open up the throttle. Wherever he's going, they must need him bad."
Along with the other Howling Commandos, Jones took part in many assaults against HYDRA. This included a mission to capture Arnim Zola. Jones, Bucky Barnes and Steve Rogers boarded the Schnellzug EB912. Rogers and Barnes entered the train while Jones remained on the roof and made his way to the head of the train. Jones took Zola into custody; however, he later learned that Barnes had been killed during the mission.[1]

Jones was a somewhat quiet but friendly soldier. With his knowledge of French, he was able to quickly become friends with French speaker and teammate Jacques Dernier. He would follow Captain America's orders and was able to catch Arnim Zola by listening to his captain and going to the front of the train.
Abilities[]
Expert Marksman: Jones wielded a machine gun during World War II as his weapon of choice, using it to successfully raid many HYDRA facilities across Europe.
Multilingualism: Jones was fluent in his native English, as well as French and German, providing translations to his squad members.
Schnellzug EB912: Jones was with the Howling Commandos as they infiltrated the Schnellzug EB912 with the goal of capturing Arnim Zola. The Commandos zip lined onto the top of the train, and Jones rode on top of it while Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes infiltrated the train. While Zola was distracted by Rogers and Barnes, Jones boarded the train and held him at gunpoint, arresting them.

Whip & Fiddle: Jones and his fellow soldiers drank together at Whip & Fiddle, when they were approached by Steve Rogers and offered the chance to fight alongside him.
HYDRA Base Camp C3: Jones was taken and held hostage in HYDRA's weapons facility, where he was forced to build weapons. However, he and the rest of the soldiers present broke out with help from Steve Rogers.
In the comics, Gabe Jones was the first African-American regular supporting character. His relationship with Peggy Carter was one of the first interracial relationships in comics.
