- "...mess up here, and I'd soon be signing for the night-watch with all the other no-hope kids."
- -Lucy Carlyle regarding her interview with Lockwood & Co., The Screaming Staircase
Night watch kids are youths with some measure of Talent, but which is not of sufficient strength to join an Agency. They're hired to guard corporations and government agencies overnight, getting paid very little and having not nearly enough protection. They are provided a iron-tipped spear[1] as their only weapon against the ghosts that prowl London at night.
According to Lucy Carlyle, most children with strong psychic talent became agents. Those were not good enough for this joined the night watch, but she felt they were not to be underestimated. George Cubbins agreed that night watch kids were not normally the type to make up stories.[2]
Night Watch children were typically assigned to roles such as guard duty, keeping watch in dangerous areas and reporting in as needed.
Flo Bones was dismissive of the idea of working for the night watch, stating that she wasn't interested in being taken advantage of by the big corporations and being paid a pittance, being given a stick and told to stand in the cold all night, watching for Spectres.[3]
