The Fittes Manual for Ghost-hunters[1], or simply the Fittes Manual, is a book written by Marissa Fittes, founder of the Fittes Agency, the first psychical investigation agency. The book advises ghost-hunters what to do in the event of a haunting, due to the existence of the Problem.

Notably, having been issued by Penelope Fittes, it provides practical advice on means of driving back ghosts, but offers little to no advice that would be useful in solving the Problem, this instead being information she keeps to herself.

Lucy Carlyle received her first copy of the Fittes Manual after working for two years at the Jacobs & Co. agency and achieving her third grade, along with her first rapier.

According to Penelope Fittes, the first edition of the manual was her mother Marissa's attempt to coalesce all the discoveries she had made into an accessible format for others who might wish to follow her. For the Fifth Edition, she stated that she had made certain updates, but it was still her mother's book.

Behind the scenes[]

In "This Will Be Us" from the Lockwood & Co. TV series, the Fittes Manual is depicted as also containing a brief biography of Marissa Fittes, as well as a photo. Lucy Carlyle and Norrie White sign their names underneath the photo, promising each other that one day "This will be us." It is described as being the Fifth Edition, having been published in December 2017. This timetable is pushed forward from that of the original novels, as the TV series is indicated to be set in more-or-less the same timeframe as which it was released, as Lucy is awarded her Grade 4 certificate for her work at Combe Carey Hall on 20 October 2022.
