Score: 4.5/10
Stand out: Taissa Farmiga
The Nun is another spin-off from The Conjuring franchise, it is a mediocre horror movie but isn't the worst to belong in this universe.
The nun character was first seen in The Conjuring 2 where it kept attacking Lorraine Warren. This movie is a look at its origins before the Warrens showed up. The nun is a demonic presence at a convent which caused a nun to kill herself, a priest and a not-quite nun go to investigate.
A lot of the scares are just average horror movie scares which have been used in so many other films. The whole Conjuring franchise has fallen into a formulaeic way of storytelling and can make some of the entries, such as this one, feel like a cash grab.
There is no decent reason given as to why a girl who hasn't taken her vows yet is taken to the convent to investigate. The most they try is that the convent is in a European country that Taissa Farmiga's character has a familial connection. Although she says she doesn't really know the culture and it ultimately doesn't matter because everyone speaks English. This felt more like a contrived way to create a possible romantic interest between her and their guide.
Taissa Farmiga gives a strong performance as the lead character and is easily the most talented actor in the cast. However, her being cast as a character who has no relation to Lorraine Warren makes things very confusing. Vera Farmiga, who plays Lorraine, is the older sister of Taissa and the two look very similar. It's distracting seeing these two characters, who aren't related, being played by very similar looking actresses.
The final scene of the movie tries to create a cheap connection between this movie and the first Conjuring. It shows one of the scenes from The Conjuring and tries to directly link it to The Nun. The problem here is that they changed dialogue in the scene, completely ruining the universe's continuity.
The Nun has plently of issues but the actual character of the nun is very creepy. However she isn't in the movie nearly as much as she should be. That being said, The Nun is still better than the first Annabelle movie.
