Compared to most, I really enjoyed The Nun. Unfortunately, for this sequel, I seem to be seeing what others saw in that first film. The nun herself is not in it nearly enough, attempting to build to a big epic scare. When the time comes, though, she’s a big giant mess. Her demise is easily predicted, the angular closeups of her face fail to terrorize, and the rules for her engagement are unclear. The focus is never set on one demonic being—there are several menacing moments taking place at once and the film never tries to center the audience on any one story or character. Some added symbolism is brought in with eyes of all sorts, but it really isn’t needed.
This marks a milestone, though, as it’s the first R-rated film that I’ve taken my now-teenage daughter to go see in the theater. She thought she’d be scared, but she was not. We both liked the magazine scare though. One good scene in a pile of rubbish.
