Liked this more than many modern documentaries. The concept is interestingly unwieldy and is handled with a refreshing confidence. It doesnt always hit, but when it does… 

Edited like a loose groove, I’m glad this subject gets an in-depth treatment that could see cinematic longevity due to it also being good and interesting

would pair really well with live action Popeye

always will be one of my favorite movies. Roughshod, maybe too much star power for its own good but also utilizes everyone to their fullest.

so many of my emotions and sensibilities were shaped early on by people who worshipped guys like this (but refuse to acknowledge their pain and suffering beyond “thats rough, but in the job description…”). unlearning those tendencies has and will continue to be a struggle. so watching this again now and feeling like i still speak the language a little too well is distressing. 

but anyway Beat Takeshi always makes me sob

this sentiment isnt accurate at all but my drunken analogy is:

Cis gay men write trans women getting raped like Cis het men write cis women getting raped. 

there are zero festivities left in this holiday for me, but collective gatherings still feel paramount.

Forgot how devastating some (a lot) of this is. Kitschy at every level, but if you can accept that, it really hits home.

All the makings of a cult fav; it allows itself to play in its style semi-occasionally to offset the stressed realism and it ties together the picture and scene really well.
