When you see these great films, you will not hesitate much to describe Italian Period cinema as the greatest in Europe. Indeed, it has been the only competitor to Hollywood since the beginning of the professional film industry in terms of Period drama besides Japanese Cinema and also the best under Romanticism around the world. Visconti's works always amuses me for its Exquisite elements of Romanticism but they also share a good ratio of Political commentary. Being said that Senso (1954) is the best film of his in my opinion, The Leopard reminded me a lot of Senso in terms of scale and the themes.
Great performance by Burt Lancaster & Alain Delon and a great story about love for Sicily and its traditions & history tangled with Romanticism Politics.
