Colin’s review published on Letterboxd:
Undeniably weaker when compared to the rest, while overall solid as a standalone film. A fun, fast but flawed sequel.
I feel Brie Larson has improved but not a whole lot. She's nicely reserved and sweet but its her 2 main co-stars who bring out the best in her. Teyonah Parris is well rounded and grounds the trio while having some fun energy, but its standout Iman Vellani whose a ray of sunshine and brings that same upbeat lovable fangirl attitude that does the film many favors. Zawe Ashton regrettably makes for a weak villain though I understood her motives. Kamala's family Zenobia Shroff, Mohan Kapur, and Saagar Shaikh, and Sam Jackson offer pleasant support.
For me the separate elements work substantially on their own and aren't an issue for me. As for the most time I thought the movie was pretty fun, particularly the location-swap action and the dynamic of the trio. I like the contrast beween the individual relations, the underlying tension, intimate moments, and how personal and story conflicts & consequences carried over from its predecessor.
However it's not a particular strongly put together of a film and comes across as pretty jumbled. Even away from the entanglement. I see with what it wanted to do even if it could be handled better. But its fun sense of humor does it favors, allowing for plenty of fun laughs or banter, from both the main trio and the Kahn family. The action scenes are mostly fun, kinetic and pretty creative.
The effects and visuals overall are nicely colorful and mostly serviceable. Sometimes it could be a little dodgy or iffy, but nothing that bothered me that much. The various energy based powers look cool and different too.
In the end I still found it mostly enjoyable. Again my big issue is how it doesn't come that nicely together, but it benefits from the new additions, its sense of fun, its brisk shorter runtime, and the individual elements. If anything though, the promises for the future look marvelous and got me very excited.
