Is Frank Capra's holiday standard It's a Wonderful Life sentimental and emotionally manipulative? Sure. But I never make it through this movie with dry eyes, and that's impressive. And George Bailey (James Stewart) is a hell of a character, a genuinely terrific and selfless man who actually gets to indulge in some self-pity and misdirected anger and rail against his circumstances rather than being some saintlike hero who sits back and takes his punches. The ensemble cast, including wonderful turns from Donna Reed, Lionel Barrymore, and of course Henry Travers seal the deal.
