2023 Catch Up:

As 2023 has come to an end, I have been quite disappointed in most “big” releases, but films like Society of the Snow have kept the year from being a complete disaster for me. Society of the Snow is a harrowing and gut wrenching watch that may be the most effective real life disaster film I’ve seen in quite some time. Although the formulaic survival narrative structure is present, the approach through the raw humanity in the dialogue and the performances makes the film feel entirely its own. Our survivors go through extreme physical changes and raw emotions that no human can comprehend and our actors do a marvelous job portraying the horrific situation. Enzo Vogrincic does a great job playing Numa, the survivor whose perspective we follow for a majority of the runtime. Not only does Vogrincic look like he could be related to Adam Driver, but he acts just as well as him here. He gives one of the year's most underrated performances and I can’t wait to see more from him. Every shot in the film is breathtaking, thanks to filming on location and fantastic, large set pieces. You feel the constant sense of hopelessness our survivors face, mostly due to the vast landscape surrounding them and cinematography capturing the grand scale of the Andes. Despite a slightly long runtime, some of the audio for the dialogue not matching up with the character’s speaking, and some things left unexplained for (I’m assuming) time’s sake, Society of the Snow is a nearly flawless execution of the survival genre. With exceptional direction from J.A. Bayona, raw and gut wrenching performances, and breathtaking location shooting, Society of the Snow is a film that I won’t soon forget about.
