A very complex film that tackles the story of a very complex man. There is so much to digest here, almost impossible to take quite a bit of it in on first viewing. That's not necessarily a fault of the film, its just so densely packed and being so dialogue heavy it is a film that will undoubtedly reveal itself in different ways on future viewings. That said I kept wishing things would slow down a bit so I could take it all in, it was a beautiful but often confusing experience I have to say. That said this IMAX screening was a fantastic experience in itself. The film looked glorious up on that huge screen with the cinematography being an absolute work of art and the score and sound design are utterly tremendous! We know that from a technical aspect Nolan's films will always impress and this is certainly up there with his best on that front. Its 3hrs long and filled with mostly dialogue but the editing is done in such a way that it never lets up and builds so much tension when needed. Cillian Murphy gives a triumphant performance. A man who could be both a hero and a villain, going back to the complexities of the film itself is brought to life in a different way than I'd expected but his performance is captivating none the less. I think i just wanted to be able to connect with the man more, or at least feel like we really honed in on his thoughts and feelings. Given the pace of the film and the way the timeline is put together that felt like it may have gotten lost a long the way. I just think focusing on Oppenheimer more would have been where the really interesting stuff was. The film does clearly display his turmoil at coming to terms with what he has created but when it feels like it could / should go deeper it cuts away to continue the more court room drama aspect of the film. Perhaps I'll just pick up more on a future viewing but the structure certainly can be confusing. Surely Murphy will be favourite to take home the best actor Oscar and the stacked cast along side him are all brilliant with Robert Downey Jr being a strong contender for a best supporting actor nomination at next year's Oscars too. Some very familiar faces might not have much screentime but they are on fire when they do. Emily Blunt and Florence Pugh probably being my favourites. I can't deny that this film has left me feeling a little exhausted but also wanting to know more, but I wish some of the stuff I am curious to learn was in the film. But there really is some fantastic stuff in it and it feels like its very own thing. It has given me hope that with people like Nolan around the future of cinema is still in some safe hands. And the buzz in cinemas at the moment is a brilliant thing to see!
