Almodóvar is great as always, but I will admit it was very strange to have him do a fully-English film for once. As such the performances are great, and I loved the unserious tone, but the prose tends to be a little wonky.

I love how you can tell Sony had no faith in this. Rest in piss, the Sony-Spideyverse.

    Oh, Canada

I guess it only makes sense that Schrader too would have a film about grappling with one's legacy. While I didn't entirely jive with the presentation of it all, I cannot deny he's crafted a beautiful film here. There's just something about the idea of one coming to terms with the fragility of life - the good and the bad of it all - and making peace with what they accomplished on Earth before departing to the next life.

  • Snow White

    Snow White

    ★★½

It’s crazy to me that what might have been seen as a good reimagining turns sour the moment Gal Gadot enters the picture. Every moment without her has some semblance of classic Disney magic; every moment with her brings nothing but unintentional laughter. Pasek and Paul’s new music is their usual shtick but at least they’re stylistically good! And their reworking of the original songs makes for some fun musical sequences - “Heigh Ho” and “Whistle While You Work” are a…

    Nightbitch

    ★★½

Squandered potential with a good cast and premise. Really hated that kid.

  • Queer

    Queer

    ★★★★

Haunting, dreamlike, and downright devastating. Luca's use of tonal dissonance, coupled with a killer screenplay and a gloomy score from Reznor/Ross, lands with a home-run - juxtaposing Burroughs' own loneliness and self-hatred with the excess and fast-pace of the era. Daniel Craig puts in a tragic and moving performance here.

  • Maria

    Maria

    ★★★½

Probably the weakest in Larraín's 20th century trilogy, but that's no discredit. Marvelous work here from all involved - not the least owed to Angelina Jolie's impeccable portrayal of the famed opera singer. I guess where I take issue is that where the other two films delve heavily into the lead's psyche, here it never feels like we get a sense of who Maria is. We get flashbacks and see her struggles, sure, but all to the detriment of her depth. It's something I was really eager to see Larraín tackle, and it didn't necessarily hit the mark for me.

Very well-acted film all around, but the pace is a huge issue. Big slow burn. Powerful material though.

  • Black Bag

    Black Bag

    ★★★★

A sleek, perfectly fine-tuned espionage romance thriller. What makes it so fantastic is that it cuts out all the fluff; if this were a streaming show it would have taken 8-9 episodes to reach the finale - Soderbergh does it in just 90 minutes. He and Koepp are such a perfect team-up, it's not even funny. Evening games with Kathyn and George haven't been this fun in a while.

I know a concerning amount of this from memory.

  • The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie

The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie

    ★★★★

In an era where it seems like the Looney Tunes can’t seem to escape the consequences of corporate greed, it’s refreshing to know there are still people out there that appreciate the original shorts and their comedy as much as I do. Warner Bros. has got to figure out how to handle these guys; I could watch a hundred more of these. Go see it in theaters!

  • Mickey 17

    Mickey 17

    ★★★★

All those delays and yet, I feel like Mickey 17 couldn’t have come along at a better time. I adored all of it - weird quirks, earnestness, and all. Bong and Pattinson are a match made in heaven.
