In the opening, we follow as an unseen operative infiltrates "Gaddafi's Old Chemical Plant," drawing out a guard. BAM! The guard is killed by incoming fire from a helicopter. My one-word assessment of Poolman would probably be, "affable". Chris Pine, who co-wrote and directed, gives a likable performance as Darren Barrenman, the titular pool man for a small apartment complex in L.A. Sometimes we're meant to laugh with him, sometimes at him. Where the film succeeds best is in the chemistry between Pine and Annette Bening and Danny DeVito, who play his married friends. Boxing is easily the most cinematic sport. Partly, this is because the ring is so manageable a setting, but mostly it's because a match develops a dramatic narrative improvised by its two stars. The dynamics of power shift from one thrown punch to the next, and knowing spectators can also place the story at hand in the larger context of the combatants' careers and lives for even greater depth and complexity.
