I couldn’t even tell you what made me decide to watch this of all movies tonight, but I did. I’m pretty sure the only other time I watched this one was on late night cable back when it came out.
It’s pretty awful. It has none of the style or atmosphere that make the first two enjoyable (yes, I enjoy part 2). The idea that this super white girl is just running around the Mexican community of Los Angeles without ever really running into any problems is hysterical, but not as hysterical as watching Candyman float down a subway tunnel in an insanely ill-advised special effect.
I noticed that almost every review I read said how awful Donna D’errico is and I just have to disagree on that. I legitimately feel like she was the only thing that made this whole mess watchable and I really liked her. Even Tony Todd comes off as pretty embarrassing in this one, but I thought Donna rose above her Playmate status (not that there’s anything wrong with being a Playmate, it just sets a bar) and did the best she could with the shit she was given. Maybe I’m just a sucker for a chain smoking blond with lots of baggage. Actually I know I am.
