Paint Drying

Sorry: no film review today, as I spent the evening watching JA Productions' retrospective on Puss In Boots, which is quite a long one.
And what can I say: it's finally out. I imagined there might be copyright issues, but I kept waiting hopefully for it to arrive, a comprehensive review on all Puss In Boots-related products except The Last Wish, especially the series, which is the main attraction.
JA Productions, take this paint drying a bit like a comment under your video: I could do it there, but I feel freer here.
And of course an invitation to watch this video: it's 2 hours, don't waste so much time, it's less hours than my mega-analysis: you have no excuses.
(spoilers for all the products I talk about)

Puss In Boots (2011)
There's not much to disagree with, because I could pretty much copy everything you've said.
After watching The Last Wish numerous times, I've come to the conclusion that the first film, despite not being bad, isn't so good anymore when the sequel is an improvement on every single aspect and not an evolution, which could still justify watching it, and I too would go with a 7-, although I'm tempted to go towards a 6.
I like the analysis on the twist and how, in the end, it's very complicated: a way to, in a way, fool the audience on first viewing, but on subsequent rewatches it simply doesn't make sense, besides being a predictable twist. And yes: the 'I've always been there' is hopefully not to be taken seriously, because I too find it hilarious.
Also nice is the reflection on the too-short adventure in what is theoretically supposed to be an adventure film. Although compared to you, I don't know if I would have liked to have had it longer, since it's not too interesting in the first place: good, solid, but not to want more.
If I really had to gain runtime, maybe I would have cut the flashback a bit, which in my view is too long and cuts too much from the film. OK: I get that it's important, but for an adventure film they spend a bit too much time on it.
On the characters, I don't think they are too great, but they are good: Puss In Boots has never been my most significant character, but in this film they did a solid job of expanding him. Having flaws is something all good protagonists should have, otherwise you're the bland, perfect Luck protagonist, so it should come as no surprise.
Kitty here is good, nothing great, she has solid chemistry with the lead but nothing like what Joel Crawford will do.
On Humpty I don't feel he really deserved redemption: I mean, as a villain he can still fit in, but forcing an emotional connection at the last minute seems unnecessary, making his death hollow.
The couple whose names I can't even remember are so forgettable. Like you, maybe improving their screentime could have been an idea, but it's not enough. They needed to be more in-depth character-wise.
What makes the 3 villains so memorable in the sequel is that they are integral to the story, they are 3 different types of villain and each one serves the themes the film wants to tell: no character in The Last Wish is useless. Here, the pair doesn't make their mark, they aren't scary enough to be frightening, but neither are they deep enough to be sympathetic, or even funny enough to be a good comic romp.
Puss In Boots is still a good film, just one that has been severely damaged by having a sequel that manages to remark on all these more redefined points, such as the animations, which for goodness sake are good, but it's just not the same now (in the original review, when there was only the trailer, I mentioned how they could be compared to the graphic style of Booster Course Pass, where the style is different, but both are good in their own way, just incompatible, a phrase I feel has aged a little badly now).
Last point: the OST has never been something I pay too much attention to, but indeed the first Puss In Boots has a solid soundtrack.

Puss in Boots: The 3 Diablos (2012)
So, I remember seeing this special, like years ago, I can't even say a precise indication, so don't count on any concrete opinions of my own.
I agree that the goal of a special should be to give more, a little adventure for hardcore fans (like you) to expand the franchise (kind of like how Kung Fu Panda has 3,000 specials that give more about my favourite characters).
Sounds... cute? I'll just have to take your word for it here, but if you tell me he manages to maintain continuity and help Puss with the 3 kittens, I'll take your word for it (I'll also add that the line you cut is funny).

The Adventures Of Puss In Boots (2015-2018)
This is definitely the part I was most interested in from the whole analysis, without taking away from everything else.
And you said it yourself: nobody on YouTube is talking about it, even if they wanted to.
For being a DreamWorks series based on a character from the Shrek franchise, I expected a lot more commentary and analysis. Instead the desert.
You were the first to talk about it, and well too, and I thank you for that.
You wanted to see someone else who has seen the series and get their opinion? Here I am.
I remember watching the series since the TV premiere (I didn't have Neflix at the time), following every single episode and every single season until the actual finale, but a while ago. I don't have a fresh memory about the series, so I can't tell you too much, but something I can still mention, because trust me, there are things to say.
Before talking about the individual seasons, I'd better mention the animations.
Obviously this film has no cinematic quality, and with The Last Wish it looks worse, but for what it wants to be it is perfectly serviceable and does its job. Besides, it could have been much worse (dead with laughter at the thinly veiled reference).

The Adventures Of Puss In Boots: Season 1
The first season is the classic start with self-contained episodes that serves solely to introduce the characters and the series, which is common with many other series. And it's not hard to see why: it pays to have a foundation on which to build a fanbase.
This is the season in which I have absolutely the least to say: these are episodes that exist. I guess among the highs I can mention Sword, because the idea is interesting, Golem, a character I'm glad they are given more, and Luck, because the 3 cats are hilarious.
On the characters, I remember liking almost all of them right from the start, especially this version of Puss In Boots, which I didn't find bad, Dulcinea, who was a fun character who I found a better companion for Puss at the time (though with The Last Wish now I'm not so sure), Artepheus is fun and better than Merlin, aptly named, while the orphans did their job. I suppose it's important to mention the point that Toby appears on the adventure in practically most of the episodes, which can be annoying, which I agree with, when they could have used the opportunity to introduce us to more characters.
And that's it: that's all I have to say about the first season.

The Adventures Of Puss In Boots: Season 2
A season that serves to go into more detail and give a real storyline to go on, a season that has started to grab my attention. As you said, this season is about starting to build a barrier that can once again defend San Lorenzo.
Unfortunately, this is also the season that introduces the character I detest the most in the entire series. No, it's not Feejee (although that plotline is quite annoying), but Uli.
I find it strange that you didn't say anything too negative about him, because I hate Uli with all my heart. He's such an annoying, unfunny, stereotypical character with some of the stupidest plot points. I'll come back to it later, but seriously in season 4 they try to sell me on his actual redemption? Pathetic: he's always been bad until now. Now that Bloodwolf doesn't want him anymore, he decides to do the right thing? Thank god in that same episode he leaves for good, because I can't stand him that long.
Alright, besides Uli, I like this season.
I agree that the first episodes shouldn't be fillers, when by then that phase has already passed and you have to start raising the stakes, while I like the second part where something starts to move.
On the episodes, I could mention Scimitar, still of a character I like in the first season, which however is conpensated by the introduction of cancer in a character, and the finale consisting of Yes? and No, which is the return from the forgettable shifter, which however has a solid final battle with some of the characters we knew in the first 2 seasons, especially the 3 cats (also from script I have to add that the frame where Puss smiles in the room is cursed and I'm grateful you didn't put it in the video).
I know, it's not that much, but it's one of the seasons I remember the least, while the others are a bit clearer.

The Adventures Of Puss In Boots: Season 3
Ok, I didn't remember hating this season: when you said it was the worst thing in the franchise except Shrek the Third, I really knew you didn't like it (there's a curse with 3 lol)
I, on the other hand, don't think I hate it that much, even though I recognise its weaknesses and frailties.
For one thing, Uli is present here, so it's necessarily worse, but I like the idea of having a team to defeat Bloodwolf. It's a bit excessive to have 2 seasons of buildup, but the payoff in season 4 is so satisfying that kinda I forgive.
I like more that all these characters are presences that will have 1, maximum 2 episodes before them, allowing them to shine more.
The Duchess is good as a villain, but works much more as a secondary character, I agree, El Guante Blanco is an obvious addition, who has a great pairing with Goodsword, Golem is also there.
I agree that it's annoying that Puss has to learn the same lesson over and over again, it's a recurring problem in shows where at some point you don't know what to make the characters do anymore, but it's never bothered me that much, precisely because I know about this problem.
The pirate storyline is stupid and absolutely had to be cut, also leading to a very weak and unremarkable ending (I don't care that later in later seasons), because we don't know those characters and don't care about them.
On the rest of the episodes, I too liked Coin Toss, it's filler, but it's good filler, Copycat introduces another fun addition in Puss Dos (wasted opportunity when, in the episode excerpt you showed, you didn't make some sort of foreshadowing to Evil Puss, since Puss In Boots blatantly says so) and the first 2 episodes, I actually found them strangely funny.
So yeah: I don't hate this season that much, it has its weaknesses undoubtedly, but I've seen worse (I didn't mention that the King Pickles episode is not good).

The Adventures Of Puss In Boots: Season 4
Good season with an outstanding finale: the last 2 episodes are epic. Bloodwolf is a villain that could have been boring and one-eyed, instead we appreciate his use of fears to hurt others and he has a great presence: such a scary villain we will never see again.
Seeing him too, I thought it might be some sort of correlation with Death, not least because they are both wolves who represent fear and are excellently written, but in the end they are 2 slightly different figures (and one of the reasons I'm sure the series is offcanon, but I'll come back to that).
Dulcinea's sacrifice is very heartfelt and Bloodwolf's defeat, despite being a little anticlimactic, is also understandable, because how else would you beat someone like that?
A small mention should also be made of Written By, which is an episode I enjoyed for the same conclusion as yours.
Besides being an insight into Dulcinea's character and a commentary on the toxicity of a fan, it's so interesting to see that the messaging pushes the value of an artistic work, regardless.
Every single film, even if it's done badly, will always have a person who appreciates it on a personal level: Monsters University is considered a mediocre film by many, but for me it's special, and I'm probably one of the few Seal Team messengers around, so I really understand what the episode is going for: all criticism, even the biggest, can't negate the work done by so many people. We're here because we love cinema, but sometimes it's good to remind ourselves that there are human beings like us behind it (except if it's written by AI, then that's another thing).
Boar Games is a good episode to delve into Pajuna, which has devisably too many double entendre jokes, and the first few episodes are also solid for the search for the gems (I don't love In Dreams as much as you do, but I remember being so confused when it seemed like everything was solved in such a short time, until afterwards the truth was revealed and I was like "ah, right" lol).
Overall I really enjoyed it as a season.

The Adventures Of Puss In Boots: Season 5
A different season, not least because it's a constant alternation of new characters each time. I guess it's sad that the team disbanded, also because I liked them, but it's fair to leave room for the newly introduced characters as well, however it's even sadder that they will never reappear, which is so stupid, because in season 6 they could have been useful.
Anyway, I enjoyed this season as well. My favourite is certainly Too Many Cats, in which they introduce the overall villain of the season, Evil Puss.
I know he's just an evil version of Puss, but he has a certain charm in his characterisation, possesses excellent manipulative skills and I love how Puss Dos is essential in his defeat. I remembered saying to myself as soon as I finished the episode "too bad he's only doing one episode, because I wish he'd do more" and being pleasantly surprised by his return as the season's villain: the series rewards me for Uli's suffering with the return of a truly great villain. Evil Puss perhaps in my top 5 favourite characters of the series.
Of course I have to link back to the finale, which like you I appreciate for the variety it brings. Refreshing to see the others possessing superpowers influenced by the dimension, but I hate how Puss In Boots never has an explanation as to why he's without anything.
It had never occurred to me that it could be Evil Puss's influence and the fact that they are identical, which could be a way of giving a clue as to who he might be: that's how I interpreted it.
Solid ending that manages to dignify Evil Puss without killing him off. Spoilers for next season, but it makes sense that it could have been a year ago the way the timing works (though that would mean Evil Puss took over the world in a very short flash of time, which is weird).
As for the other episodes, I was hoping you wouldn't mention Remember Me Not, because it's so creepy that Death looks like it's from a children's show by comparison, but I recognise that it's a well-crafted episode that has a great anticipation in the previous episode, The Iceman Melteth is a cute episode, Caballo Sin Cabeza is an episode that manages to dignify a cameo, even if it's all thrown in the bin afterwards, but whatever.
Solid season, but that will be little compared to the actual finale, of which I feel there are considerations to be made, and not just the surface effect...

The Adventures Of Puss In Boots: Season 6
Last season of this great adventure: I still vividly remember being in hype for the season finale.
Before we talk about the elephant in the room, there's a whole season.
There are some final takeovers, which you also mentioned, that helped to redefine the characters better, even if it remains a wasted opportunity not to have everyone return (the 3 black cats haven't appeared since the second season, for example) and the main characters reach great maturity, like the main character Puss and Dulcinea, who become very cute as a couple.
But all this for me is not the best of the season.
I was hoping deep down that you'd mention it and talk about it a bit even if it was an on-off character, but I'm grateful that you mentioned Guy Fox, who is my favourite character in the whole show.
A hustler who uses his charm to mask his incompetence and inner emptiness, a fox who thinks about becoming a hero only to be shown in better shape and curry the will of Dulcinea, an inignifying idol.
Great character, in that episode he rocks, but you stole the words out of my mouth: WHY didn't he appear earlier?
Why does such a compelling character have to appear in the last season and be wasted? You could have had him doing a revenge, maybe a redemption, which is an excellent option, but none of that will happen because they decided to place this character at the end of it all.
This really is THE wasted opportunity of the whole series. Thank you for taking 1 minute to shed light on this issue.
The rest of the season has good episodes, many already mentioned in the video, like One Last Job.
But this seems like the time to talk about the finale, because let's just say I have slightly different opinions to yours.
The return to the original status quo doesn't appeal too much to me as a narrative medium, neither in No Way Home, nor here. They are endings that only aim to reflect on all that the protagonist has lost and offer an emotional ending. I am grateful that he remembers everything that happened, because otherwise it would have been even more pointless, but you lose everything that has been built up in the other characters.
And in fact this is something I was hoping you would touch on but I didn't see anyone really do in the in-depth: everything is back to status quo, but everything. There's a golem that's still chasing Puss, Duchess is still evil, El Guante Blanco is old and sore, Puss Dos doesn't exist, Evil Puss is still around, theoretically Bloodwolf hasn't been defeated yet (even though he's in a dimension where time doesn't exist, so it's hard to tell), Guy Fox is still a crook, Uli unfortunately doesn't suffer the consequences of his actions, ect.
All this is to say that not only will Puss not get to know his friends, but in a way all the positive changes he brought to the characters he met in the series will also be undone, which doesn't seem like a very smart choice from a purely growth point of view.
The only thing I paradoxically liked was the return of Dulcinea.
To say that you're left with only memories that won't affect you as a person is one thing (sorry to interrupt abruptly, but it just occurred to me now that that ogre you mention in the video can't, in the end, be considered because everything that happens to them never happened), but to say that there's a person who shares them with you is another.
Their relationship is so good that to throw that away too would have been too much, so I like that in the end he gets to be with Dulcinea all the time, and I don't think there's a day deal or anything like that, although it's an interesting thesis. Simply for me, in this timeline, he had a happy ending with Dulcinea, whereas Shrek's is a different timeline.
Your connection fits, but to say that Puss rejects Dulcinea for Kitty, at this specific chronology, doesn't seem too honest.
It's also true that Kung Fu Panda has always done this with its series, so it'll be that, but there's a reason why the series and films constitute 2 separate worlds and merging them is never too great an idea (there are still people complaining about the MCU for this very reason).
Making a conclusion about the series, I liked it and I'm glad you did too. Unfortunately my memory isn't very fresh, with a general rewatch maybe I would have given you more to talk about, but I found it a solid series, with a good cast of characters and some episodes good and others a bit less so.
Thanks again for talking about it, because it's genuinely the first time I've heard opinions on the series, though...

Trapped In An Epic Tail (2017)
Yes: this one pretty much sucks. In fact, every single inter-epic series of this calibre is not good.
I hate it when the choices you make at the end are just excuses to go back to the ending the special wants, because then what's the point?
Instead of talking about this special, I would like to tell you about another one from the Captain Underpants series, also on Netflix, 'Captain Underpants: Epic Choise-o-Rama'.
This one is structured like a classic episode of the series (you've seen the film, so you more or less know what you can expect from a series) and you always have the choice of 2 options to move the story forward, with 3 different endings (1 of which, however, is not accepted by the protagonists, forcing you to go back and redo your choice).
The point is that, apart from the uninteresting plot and the fact that there is no story to further this mechanism, the 2 endings are always good. There's never a choice to have a bad ending, an ending that's good for the antagonists, but only the best for the protagonists, which is so limiting: it's not canon, you don't have to have the good guys win.
The choices are not only limiting at the end but also the endings themselves.
On the Puss In Boots special, like you I hope to ignore it, because this choice could be interesting, but it is not exploited properly.

The Trident (2023)
The last piece in the franchise and a fantastic short. Sure, we're not talking about anything too special, but I felt the need to return with the protagonists I love.
I remember watching the short for the first (and only) time on Youtube in the original language, so without the Italian dubbing. I liked that they managed to keep one of the strong elements in the Spider-Verse style and I loved the presence of Goldibear (she wasn't supposed to be there, but it when will it ever happen again?), the comedy is strong and the idea interesting: I'd almost like to see a miniseries with all the deaths in detail.

Timeline
I love it when you complicate your life trying to find connections between series and movies.
Your timeline is feasible, but as I said I always thought the series was offcanon and you haven't managed to convince me too much to the contrary. On the contrary: the fact that Puss learns to be less superficial I think with the series he would have already learnt this by force, giving you a trauma you would find hard to forget.

I spent more time doing this analysis than doing a normal review lol.
Really nice video, I appreciated your efforts, looking forward to this review of The Last Wish. Keep up the good work!
