SP-Santa Shrek’s review published on Letterboxd:
Hi guys. You may be wondering “why does my Paint Drying entry have a rating for some reason?” Well, I’m gonna be talking about a TV show, a pretty average TV show. And that is The Cleveland Show. As I told you in a previous entry, I’m watching nothing but Seth MacFarlane shows, our “The Seth Quest” as I’m gonna call it. I was thinking about putting my Serializd of the show on Letterboxd because Serializd is less popular than Letterboxd. I wanted to put the review for the series on here so you can see my thoughts on the series. With that out of the way, let’s get on the road.
When I was young, I looked on YouTube for more Thomas and Friends videos. But one of the videos that popped up in the recommended was a cutaway from The Cleveland Show, where it has Thomas talking like a black guy. I had no idea what that was all about at the time. Later, I found out it was from The Cleveland Show, a spin-off of Family Guy.
Well, this is the show that was canceled after 4 seasons because people hated it for being the same show as Family Guy, I mean it's a spin-off with one of Peter's friends, Cleveland in it. Is it fit for Cleveland to be in his own show? Was this series necessary? Well, I'm gonna take a look. Keep in mind, my points aren't the most original. Let's begin.
Season 1 was a pretty shit start. I'm just gonna say it. Cleveland isn't fit to carry out his own series. Hell, this series even flanderizes him to being a Peter Griffin clone. So, I'm just gonna do some comparisons. Imagine if you take the cutaways, humor and formula of Family Guy, but you ad in the stories, plot lines, character designs and setting of American Dad!, but replace them with black people, then you get The Cleveland Show. The other characters are not so likable. Roberta is just a mean girl who rebels against her parents, Lester is just secretly racist and why would Cleveland hang out with him, Tim the Bear isn't really funny, Cleveland's parents, Evelyn and LeVar are a pretty unlikeable couple, and Robert is just well, kind of a black Quagmire. They can even do some unlikeable things from time to time. Also, Kendra is just a stereotypical obese woman, who is there for obesity jokes. Auntie Momma is a horrible character that is obnoxious and gross, as she farts and constantly says how she's so "outrageous." Also, she's a bad representation of Trans people, like how Ida is on Family Guy. And the episode she appears in, A Brown Thanksgiving, is the worst episode of the season. The jokes and cutaways also fall flat and can be pretty tasteless at times. To be fair, there are a few decent characters, like Rallo, Cleveland Jr. and Donna, even some of the unlikeable characters can have their redeeming moments. Not to mention, the theme song is great. I mean you just can't stop singing it. I pray that season two is at least better.
Season 2 is a big improvement over the first, but it's not that good. It does have the issues from the first season I just mentioned, but there's a lot more decent and mediocre at best episodes. Sure, the other episodes are average, but like what I said, there are good ones. Cleveland is less flanderized than he was, but some of it is still there. The humor in this season has one or two funny moments, and some even caught me off guard. Unfortunately, a lot of the jokes do fall flat like they did in the previous season. My personal favorite episode of the season would have to be Hot Cocoa Bang Bang. It's actually pretty enjoyable, even by reference humor standards. I would also like to point out that it gives me vibes to Ted 2.
Season 3 is a downgrade from the last season but it's not as bad as the first season. It still has some problems from the first two but Cleveland's flanderization is down compared to the last two. I would say Die Semi-Hard may be the best episode in the series. Surprisingly, I got a few awkward laughs for some reason. I would like to say that the stories in this season are mostly boring, unengaging, uninspired, and predictable. I actually kind of forgotten a lot of the episodes in this season. Nothing much to say. Moving on.
Season 4 and the show's last season is on par with the previous one. Not as bad as the first but still not good. Nothing that much to say, other than it still has the problems the previous seasons had.
In the end, the best way I can describe this show is pointless. A pointless show that has no reason to exist. It's an unnecessary show that suffers from mostly terrible writing that results in mostly unlikeable characters, unengaging and uninteresting stories, and comedy that is not worth a laugh. However, it can have its redeeming moments, like with some good episodes, a few enjoyable characters, a laugh or two sometimes, and its surprisingly great theme song. I did get some awkward, dumb laughs to be honest. If you like Family Guy, then I recommend to just skip this show, but if you’re curious then watch it, I guess. Seriously, why would the writers give Cleveland his own show? Bye, have a beautiful time.
The Seth Quest will continue.
