SP-Santa Shrek’s review published on Letterboxd:
Back in 2022, I made an announced that I would be watching nothing but anything made by Seth MacFarlane, and I called it the Seth Quest. I have started the Quest back in Summer 2021, with the early seasons of Family Guy (Season 1-7), but I took a break for many months, and then I started it back up in 2022 around my final year in high school, and watched the later seasons of Family Guy (Seasons 8-present), with the addition of American Dad!, The Cleveland Show, Seth MacFarlane’s Cavalcade of Cartoon Comedy, and The third season of The Orville (which I watched the first two back in November 2021). In addition, I watched the first Ted film in the summer 2021, and then watched it again, and then it’s sequel, and Seth’s other movie, A Million Ways to Die in the West. I spent nearly two years on this brave and noble quest seeking the works of this made to determine if he’s any good or not.
Now I had acted this question for months while watching, how is he as an artist? Well, I believe he’s like many. Very artists have their highest highs and their lowest lows, and Seth is one of them. His highest highs were The Orville, 40% of Family Guy, and 40% of American Dad!, with his lowest lows being the later seasons of Family Guy, a few American Dad! episodes, The Cleveland Show, Seth MacFarlane's Cavalcade of Cartoon Comedy, and A Million Ways to Die in the West, with Ted 1 and 2 and Family Guy in the middle. Let’s look at the places we went on this journey.
Family Guy: To me, Family Guy is to TV as Adam Sandler’s filmography is to movies. Started pretty good with some pretty strong work, but as the years went on, the quality rapidly decreased with some of the worst things ever connived, but in this dark place has some pretty high highs.
American Dad! (Family Guy’s younger sister): It’s the Seth Rogen of TV, it can be a hit or miss for me. It has its high highs but it also has low lows. It’s also one of those cases where the copycat is better then what they’re copying.
The Cleveland Show: It’s the Friedberg and Seltzer of TV, it was never good to begin with.
Seth MacFarlane's Cavalcade of Cartoon Comedy: SuperMarioLogan all over again
Seth movies: Ted is pretty good start, but then A Million Ways to Die in the West came and ruined it all, and Ted 2 couldn’t save anything.
The Orville: It’s Seth’s magnum opus. This is best thing he’s ever made and shows how clearly passionate he is.
To end of this journey, Seth MacFarlane is a hit or miss artist who can make some high highs and low lows, but the lows aren’t his fault. He seems like a person who does his best to see what works and doesn’t. After watching all of his work, I feel like meeting him and hanging out with him, to see how he is as a person. Seth, keep doing what your doing. As for my final words of this journey, bye, have a beautiful time.
